Cerithium coralium “Dufresne View in CoL ” Kiener, 1841: 328 –329, pl. 8, fig. 3.
Cerithium coralium: Houbrick 1992: 61 View in CoL –68, figs 37–41 (full synonymy); Okutani 2000: 116 –117, pl. 58, fig. 15; Lozouet & Plaziat 2008: 108 –109, pl. 18, figs 1–3; Poppe 2008a: 292 –293, pl. 91, fig. 14; Thach 2005: 42, pl. 11, fig. 1; Zvonareva et al. 2015: 8, fig 3(5).
Material examined. Nha Phu Bay, Dam Bay, mangrove plantation and natural mangroves, over 200 specimens.
Abundance. Common.
Measurements. Up to 48 mm (Houbrick 1992).
Ecological notes. Spawn are deposited on the undersides of rocks. Reproduction with planktonic phase of unknown duration ( Houbrick 1985).
Epifaunal species in intertidal, estuarine, mangrove habitats, on muddy or sandy substratum between pneumatophores of Avicennia and on bare mud in front of the mangrove fringe. Deposit feeder, lives in areas of high organic content. Stomach contents consist of microalgae, filamentous algae, macro algae, vascular plant material and diatoms comprising detritus in this habitat (Houbrick 1992).
Houbrick (1992) suggest that presence of mangroves is a critical factor in distribution of this species, but Lozouet & Plaziat (2008) presume that this species is not a mangal component while frequently located in front of the mangal fringe.
In studied sites it was found on mud surface between pneumatophores of Avicennia and Rhizophora as well and on the sand banks of the streams in mangrove stands, sometimes in high densities.
Relation to mangroves. Predominantly mangrove-associated.
Distribution in Vietnam. Central coast, southern delta ( Thach 2005).
General distribution. IWP, from India to Fiji, from Japan to Australia (Houbrick 1992).
