Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Hanover by Peters (1877: 832); reported as Chaetodon lineolatus var. oxycephalus by Ahl (1923: 167, 169). A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 5 m depth, by Dean Tully on 6 July 2010; a video of a specimen taken at Martha's Shoal, off eastern New Hanover, at 7–41 m depth, St. KR122, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Maldives and Chagos Archipelago east to Pohnpei ( Federated States of Micronesia) and Solomon Islands, north to Philippines, south to Queensland ( Australia). Found in coral-rich areas in coastal and seaward coral reefs, 10–40 m depth. Marine.
