Chara haitensis M.P.J.F. Turpin 1829 : pl. s. 229
Fig. 23–27
FIGURES: 23–27. Chara haitensis . 23.Habit. 24. Apical ecorticated segment of a branchlet.. 25. Basal segment of a branchlet. The granular aspect is due calcium carbonate deposition. 26. Antheridium at a branchlet node of a male plant. 27. Oogonium at a branchlet node of a female plant.
Plants dioecious, up to 65 cm high, with calcium carbonate deposition. Axes 341–798 μm in diameter; internodes 0.9– 3.5 times longer than the branchlets, to 3.8 cm length; cortex 3 corticate, isostichous, regular; spine-cells solitary, well developed, 193– 1011 μm long and 39–82 μm in diameter at the base, restricted to upper internodes. Stipulodes in two whorls, two times as numerous as the branchlets, never exceeding basal branchlet segment; uppers 536–986 μm long, 71–156 μm in diameter, acuminate; lowers 480–863 μm long, 63–138 μm in diameter, acuminate. Branchlets 11–15 forming a whorl, 0.9–3.5 cm long; intercalary segments 6–12, corticate, 928–4382 μm long, 247–478 μm in diameter; basal segment ecorticate, 1402–4565 μm long, 357–613 μm in diameter; apical segment formed by 1 ecorticated cell, 289–546 μm long, 60–150 μm in diameter. Bract-cells 5–8, forming whorls, with two larger and positioned next to the bracteoles, 170–726 μm long, 56–134 μm in diameter, acuminate. Bracteoles 2, 433–1008 μm long, 72–149 μm in diameter, often larger than the madure oogonia. Gametangia at 2 nd –6 th lowest nodes, never at the base of branchlets. Oogonia 428–819 μm long, 211–747 μm in diameter; convolutions 9–13; coronula 108–240 μm high, 177–233 μm wide, apex divergent. Mature oospores not observed. Antheridia 840–1020 μm in diameter, octoscutate.
