Chondrodendron platiphyllum (A.St-Hil.) Miers (1867: 192) .
Basionym:— Cocculus platiphyllus A.St-Hil. (1825: 59) , as “ platiphylla ”.
Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Minas Novas , s.d., st., A. Saint-Hilaire s.n. (lectotype: P barcode P00748524 !, designated here; isolectotype: P barcode P00048605 !, p.p. [excluding the drupelet fragment]). Epitype:— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: Rio de Janeiro, Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca , trilha da Casa Amarela, antes da cachoeira, 20 March 2016, fr., P. Feliz & C.D.M. Ferreira 85 ( RB barcode 01179848 !, designated here; isoepitypes RBR barcode RBR00056639 !, SPF [n.v.]) .
Notes:— Cocculus platiphyllus , basionym of Chondrodendron platiphyllum , was published by Saint-Hilaire (1825) with a brief diagnosis and a direct reference to plate “ Aug. de S. Hil. Plant. us. Bras. nº. XLII ”, which was effective published later (see Saint-Hilaire, 1827). In the latter publication, a detailed morphological description is presented along with an illustration, comments on etymology, popular uses and the citation of type locality Minas Novas, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Two sterile specimens of the gathering Saint-Hilaire s.n. collected in Minas Novas are deposited at the herbarium P. The line drawing presented by Saint-Hilaire (1827, pl. 42, also our Fig. 1A View FIGURE 1 ) undoubtedly represents the specimen Saint-Hilaire s.n. (P barcode P00748524) ( Fig. 1B View FIGURE 1 ). The other specimen, Saint-Hilaire s.n. (P barcode P00048605), is a chimera, being composed of the original sterile gathering of Saint-Hilaire s.n. mixed with a drupelet fragment, likely associated with the gathering of Richard s.n. (P), collected in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and which is one of the type of Cocculus platiphyllus var. ildefonsianus . This specimen bears also two identification tags with Saint-Hilaire’s handwriting identifying the specimen as “ Cocculus platiphylla var. α Aug.”, and as “ Cocculus platiphylla var. ss ildefonsiana Aug. et Tul.”. The latter has one anonymous annotation indicating that tag does not belong to the specimen (In French: “ Cette étiquette n´apparente pas a cet specimen ”, on the label). Based on this information, the specimen Saint-Hilaire s.n. (P barcode P00748524) is designated here as lectotype ( Fig. 1B View FIGURE 1 ), the same specimen illustrated in Saint-Hilaire (1827). As stated above, these type specimens are sterile and have only a few young leaves with base cordate, an unusual characteristic in Chondrodendron platiphyllum . Therefore, we also designated here as epitype the specimen Feliz & Ferreira 85 (RB barcode 01179848), which is with developed leaves and many drupelets ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ).
