Gonocerini is represented by 7 genera, all found in the Eastern Hemisphere (Schuh & Slater 1995). Cytological data pertains to 18 species belonging to 4 genera which include 14 species of Cletus . In the present study, Cletus borealis has been cytogenetically investigated. The chromosome complement of Cletus borealis is 2n=18=14A+ 2m + X1X2 0, which is represented in 9 other species of Cletus (Toshioka 1935; Manna 1951; Dutt 1957; Parshad 1957b, 1958; Banerjee 1958; Sands 1982; Satapathy & Patnaik 1989; Kaur & Semahagn 2010; Yang et al. 2012; Kaur & Bansal 2012a). Deviations have been recorded in Cletus graminis and Cletus sp. with 2n=17=14A+ 2m +X0 (Das 1958; Yang et al. 2012) and Cletus sp. with 2n=19=18A+X0 (Parshad 1957b). In Cletus borealis with 7 pairs of autosomes, 2 pairs of autosomes are extremely large and 5 pairs are small, as also observed in other species of Cletus having 7 pairs of autosomes ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ). However, in Cletus sp. with 9 pairs of autosomes, only 1 large autosomal pair is present (Parshad 1957b). Microchromosomes are present in all the species of Cletus excepting Cletus sp. In Cletus , the dominant sex determination mechanism is X1X2 0, present in 10 out of 15 species.
