( Figures 1A, 1B, 1D View FIGURE 1 , 2D View FIGURE 2 )
MycoBank MB405951.
Holotype:— New Zealand. Taupo , Te Iringa Track, 29 April 2001, in Fuscospora fusca forest, K. Soop CO1182 ( PDD73149 About PDD ), GenBank JX 000358 ( ITS), JX000389 ( LSU).
Summary description:— Pileus 30–70 mm diam., dry, non-hygrophanous, dark grey-brown to dark copper brown, fibrillose, persistently covered by thick, ochre to greyish yellow fibres and patches, margin garnered by thick, membranous, greyish ochre tufts. Lamellae pale grey-brown to pale grey when young, close to crowded. Stipe cylindrical, sometimes with a slightly bulbous base, greyish yellow with a reddish tone and reddish fibrils (universal veil remnants), with greyish yellow rhizoids at base. Universal veil greyish ochre, reddening, copious; partial veil white. Context greyish white to pale greyish yellow, reddening; odour faint, like raw potato; taste insignificant.
Macrochemical reactions:—NaOH slowly yellowish on the universal veil remnants of the stipe, not significant in any other part, guaiac weakly blue-green, phenol weakly red; formalin nil; fluorescence in UV light absent.
Basidiospores:—ellipsoid, 7–9 × 4.5–5.2 µm, weakly verrucose ( Fig. 2D View FIGURE 2 ). Cystidia none. Universal veil hyphae 6–10 µm wide, hyaline with a brownish granular pigment.
Habitat:—Gregarious in Nothofagaceae forest, fairly common.

Comments:— Cortinarius xenosma is a fairly robust fungus with a sombre pileus, almost covered by greyish ochre remains of the universal veil when young. The reddening context, universal veil, and stipe, together with the pale lamellae are also useful characters.
