Spongites yendoi (Foslie) Y.M. Chamberlain, 1993: 102 (Figs. 10–13)
Basionym: — Goniolithon yendoi Foslie, 1900 a: 25
Lectotype: — TRH (Yendo nº. 66) Foslie (1904).
Type locality: —Shimoda Harbour, Izul, Japan, K. Yendo, April 1899.
Synonyms: —Complete reference in Chamberlain (1993).
Age: —Prainhas do Pontal —3,370 –3,185 Cal yrs B. P. (2σ).
Material examined: — BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro State,Arraial do Cabo, Prainhas do Pontal (22°59’18.8” S, 42°00’47.1” W, 2.09 m above sea level, 14 August 2014, F. T. de S. Tâmega & P. S-Oliveira, IEAPM 00333, IEAPM 00334, IEAPM 00335).
Description: —Thalli non-geniculate, encrusting (Fig. 10); internal construction monomerous with a multistratose ventral cell filaments composed of rectangular cells, 7–10 μm in length and 2–3 μm in diameter; dorsal filaments with rectangular cells, 4–5 μm in length and 3–4 μm in diameter. Cells of adjacent filaments joined by cell fusions; secondary pit connections not observed.
Empty uniporate conceptacles and flush with, to raised above the surrounding thallus surface; conceptacle chambers 120–210 μm in diameter and 80–160 μm in height (Figs. 11–13). The cylindrical pore canal is lined by cells protruding laterally into the canal and oriented parallel to the roof surface ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 12–13 ). No epithallial cells were identified.
Remarks: —Specimens ascribed to S. yendoi in this study show similarities in their conceptacle characteristics with those previously reported for the species in Japan ( Masaki 1968), South Africa ( Chamberlain 1993), Australia ( Penrose 1996), Mexico ( Mateo-Cid et al. 2007) and Brazil ( Henriques et al. 2012, Costa et al. 2014), with only minor differences in the conceptacle roof height and diameter ( Table 4).
Geographical distribution: —See Guiry & Guiry (2015) for a detailed distribution list.
Order Hapalidiales W.A. Nelson, J.E.Sutherland, T.J.Farr & H.S.Yoon in Nelson et al. 2015: 464.
