Currhaeus championi sp. nov.
( Figs. 6 View FIGURES 4–10 , 13 View FIGURES 11–14 )
Type material: Holotype, male, PANAMA: V. de Chiriqui; 25–4000 ft.; Champion. Secondary label: B.C.A. Col. III (2); Calocladon plumosum [syntype]. ( BMNH).
Diagnosis: Eye diameter almost 2× longer than interocular distance. Antenomeres 3–5 subequal in length. Pronotum with lateral margins slightly concave. Elytra yellow, basal 1/3 of sutural costa to costa 1 and apical 1/3 brown ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 4–10 ). Aedeagus with phallus widened in basal 2/4–3/ 4 in dorsal aspect, internal sac slightly sclerotized, apex like a goose head up and junction between base of phallus and phallobase as wide as phallus width ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 11–14 A-C).
Description: Maxillary palpi brown, ultimate palpomere yellow. Antennae brown, ultimate antennomere with apical half yellow. Pronotum yellow with median brown subrectangular patch. Elytra yellow, basal 1/3 of sutural costa to costa 1 and apical 1/3 brown ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 4–10 ). Trochanters and inner portion of basal third of femora yellow.
Eye diameter 1.9× longer than interocular distance. Antennomeres 3–5 of equal length. Maxillary palpomere 2 about 2.9× longer than 3 and 1.5× longer than 4. Pronotum subpentagonal, widest at basal margin, anterior margin rounded, lateral margins slightly concave, basal margin bisinuous, median longitudinal carina forming areola at posterior half. Prosternum and mesosternum trapezoidal. Elytra 4× longer than humeral width, with irregular subrectangular cells. Hind femora as long as tibia, 2.7× longer than trochanter length. Abdominal ventrite VII with shallow median distal emargination, abdominal ventrite VIII elongate, rounded apically and pointed basally. Aedeagus with basal 1/2–3/4 of phallus widened and apical 1/4 curved to right in dorsal aspect, apex like a goose head up. Internal sac slightly sclerotized ( Fig. 13A, B View FIGURES 11–14 ). Phallobase elongate, with triangular suspensorial arms, lateroapical thorns almost absent, reduced to wave-like projection of dorsal phallobase margin. Junction between base of phallus and phallobase elongate and as wide as phallus width ( Fig. 13A, C View FIGURES 11–14 ). Body length: 7.2 mm, humeral width: 1.5 mm
Etymology: species name after George C. Champion, specimen collector.
Distribution: Panama (West portion, Chiriqui province, Vólcan town) ( Fig. 18 View FIGURE 18 ).
Remark: The holotype of C. championi sp. nov. was a syntype of Calocladon plumosum Gorham, 1884 which was described based on a set of specimens ( Gorham, 1884), thus there are at least 15 syntypes of this species in BMNH (M. Geiser, personal communication).
