Derallus ambitus d’Orchymont, 1940
Derallus ambitus d’Orchymont, 1940: 193 .
Type material examined. Paratype (1): “[female symbol]”, “Paraiso CZ/ Pan Jan/ 6.11 / E A Schwarz”, “A. d’Orchymont det./ Derallus ambitus m.”, “Para-/ type ” ( USNM).
Additional material examined (3). PANAMA: Toucumen, 6.i. 1953, F.S. Blanton leg. (1: USNM); Barro Colorado Island, Canal Zone, vi. 1939, J. Zetek leg. (2: AEZS, USNM).
Diagnosis. Total length: 1.9 –2.0 mm. The combination of fine interstrial punctation on the elytra and the anterior tooth of the mesoventrite being extremely low serve to distinguish this species. Compare with the diagnosis of D. terraenovae and D. altus .
Distribution. Argentina, Brazil, Panama, Paraguay.
Remarks. Originally described from Panama, D. ambitus has subsequently been recorded as far south as Argentina. Oliva (1981: 291) mistakenly lists Louisiana ( U.S.A.) as the type locality, but this is the type locality for D. altus . It is apparently rare in Meso- America, where it is only known from a handful of specimens from Panama.
