Mesostenus annulitarsis Cameron, 1885:215 . ♀ Description, figure.
Digonocryptus annulitarsis: Townes and Townes, 1966:126 View in CoL . Generic transfer.
Digonocryptus annulitarsis: Yu and Horstmann, 1998:241 View in CoL . Listed.
Description. FEMALE. Fore wing 8.0 mm.
Head. Ventral tooth of mandible approximately as long as dorsal tooth. Clypeus apical area delimited by smooth border; clypeal margin with two small teeth. Antenna with 24 flagellomeres; white band starting at flagellomere IV; 7 flagellomeres at least 50% white.
Mesosoma . Mesopleuron with scarce short hairs, 95–99% of cuticular surface visible. Suture between sternaulus and scrobe weak or not differentiated. Posterior transverse carina of mesosternum represented by short, distinct, straight carina crossing discrimen ( Fig. 167). Metapleuron regularly transversely striate. Propodeum: area in front of anterior transverse carina polished, smooth or with faint sculpturing, medially with two complete ridges extending from carina towards anterior margin. Propodeal apophyses conspicuous, somewhat compressed (oblong in cross-section). Posterior transverse carina distinct between apophyses, bell-shaped or nearly so. Area between the transverse carinae obliquely rugose or striate-rugose; area behind posterior transverse carina oblique striate-rugose. Fore wing in Fig. 177; vein 3-Cu 1.31 times longer than 4-Cu. Hind wing in Fig. 217.
Metasoma. Postpetiole dorso-anteriorly weakly but distinctly concave; dorsolateral and median dorsal carinae absent; petiolar spiracles in dorsal view weakly or not prominent. Ovipositor 1.31–1.39 length of hind tibia. Apex of lower valve with 14 teeth.
Color. Black with yellow marks. Lateral pattern as in Fig. 1. Orbital band briefly interrupted only at malar space, width on supra-antennal area and temple about 0.3 of interocular distance, narrower on supraclypeal area. Clypeus yellow, apical area black; clypeal sulcus black. Mesosoma dorsally mostly black. Pronotum dorsally along anterior margin with wide yellow stripe medially interrupted. Propleuron postero-lateral angle with small to medium yellow spot. Scutellum mostly yellow, two large contiguous spots, one on each side. Propodeum as in Figs 1–2. Fore and mid coxae, mesally dark. Hind coxa brown, posteriorly with large yellow spot. Fore femur mostly brown, with some yellow basally (mesal and lateral), and mesally on apex. Mid femur with exact same color pattern of fore femur, but dark colors slightly darker for mid femur. Hind femur black to dark brown, or some lighter color on basal 0.1–0.2. All femora with same overall color pattern, even if hind femur slightly darker. Fore tibia mostly pale yellow to white; dark apically, basally and ventrally. Mid tibia dark brown, except basal 0.1–0.3 at least ventrally, pale yellow. Hind tibia dark brown, except basal end at least ventrally or dorsally, with lighter color (usually yellowish). Fore tarsomeres evenly colored or nearly so, brownish yellow to dark brown, or t1 lightest, t5 darkest. Mid t1 pale yellow or white between basal 0.2–0.3 and apical 0.1; t1 centrally and full t2–5, dark brown. Hind tarsus yellow or pale yellow, except brown to dark brown on basal 0.2 of t1, t4 partially or entirely, and t5. Metasoma in dorsal view mostly black; T1 apical margin with transverse yellow stripe, narrow to wide; T2 apical margin with transverse yellow stripe, wide to the point of becoming rectangular, of regular width; T3 apical margin with yellow stripe of regular width; T4–T8 laterally with yellow stripe.
Morphological variation. Fore wing 8.0– 11.6 mm. Antenna with 24–26 flagellomeres. Propodeum: area in front of anterior transverse carina medially with two incomplete ridges extending from carina towards anterior margin. Scutellum entirely, continuously yellow. Mid coxa mesally yellow. T2 apical margin with transverse yellow stripe distinctly wider laterally than medially; T3 yellow stripe at apical margin regularly, weakly narrowing medially.
MALE. Unknown
Comments. Similar to D. atrozyrix from which it can be readily separated by having the posterior transverse carina distinct between apophyses (vs. absent); T1–3 apical margin with transverse yellow stripe complete (vs. medially interrupted). The color pattern can resemble D. variegatus (Szépligeti) (compare Figs 2 vs. 4), but D. annulitarsis shows mesoscutum entirely black (vs. with a central yellow spot); T4–T8 apical margin with yellow stripe medially interrupted (vs. complete); conspicuous apophyses (vs. weak, like a carina). The propodeal yellow mark is also characteristic for the species ( Fig. 2).
