Etymology

The specific epithet is derived from the Latin adjective gibberosus, humpbacked, protuberant, and alludes to the dorsal bumps on the penis papilla of this species.

Diagnosis

Dugesia gibberosa is characterized by: asymmetrical openings of the oviducts into the bursal canal; ectal reinforcement extending from the vaginal region to more than halfway along the bursal canal; hyperplasic ovaries and under-developed testes; a peculiar blunt penis papilla provided with two dorsal bumps; ventral course of the ejaculatory duct with terminal opening; openings of the vasa deferentia halfway along the narrow seminal vesicle; small diaphragm.
