DISTRIBUTION. — Global distribution: Philippines, Indonesia, north, east and southeast Australia, New Caledonia and northern New Zealand, live in 153 (Lamprell & Healy 1998) - 2050 m (Scarabino 1995). Distribution in the New Caledonian region : east and southwest coasts of New Caledonia, live in 316-577 m.

REMARKS. — Examination of a large number of specimens belonging to several species groups confirmed that Entalina is an extremely variable genus. The morphology of the oral section, often used as a character to define species, changes with age and varies among individuals; the same applies to the curvature and sculpture. It is possible to distinguish species only when population studies are undertaken. During a recent revision of almost 100 entalinid lots from the Albatross collections from the Philippines and Borneo (USNM), as well as Indian Ocean material (USNM and BMNH), I was able to recognize three main taxonomic units: an Entalina mirifica (Smith, 1895) group (including E. quadrangularis Boissevain, 1906 as a synonym); a group containing a possible new species from the Philippines; and a group that can be considered as E. dorsicostata , and that includes the specimens in the MNHN collections from the Philippines, Indonesia and New Caledonia that Scarabino (1995) thought to be extreme forms of E. mirifica and the Indonesian specimens identified by Boissevain (1906) as E. platamodes ( Watson, 1879) . The remarks of Scarabino (1995) on the high variability of morphological characters and the need for global revision of the genus remain valid.
