Female (macroptera). Distended body length: 4.2–5.6mm. Colour uniformly dark brown. Antennal segment III yellowish at base. Tarsi dark brown. Fore wings shaded with brown, with a brown streak in basal half. Prominent setae brownish yellow, cheek setae darker. Head ( Fig. 134 View FIGURES 133–140 ) elongate, about 1.9 times as long as broad in holotype; dorsal surface sculptured marginally with transverse row of weak wrinkles, but with weak transverse reticulation at base. Cheeks sinuate, very weakly constricted in anterior fourth, more or less constricted at base, with some stout setae in posterior half in addition to long and stout postocular cheek setae. Postocular setae well developed, but shorter than 1/2 head length, blunt, at least not sharply pointed, close together, situated behind inner margin of eyes; postocellar setae shorter than diameter of a posterior ocellus, situated behind posterior ocelli; anteocellar setae much longer than diameter of a posterior ocellus. A pair of mid-vertex setae well developed, 90–95μm in holotype, but variable in length and position. Eyes comparatively small, about 1/5 as long as head; ocelli comparatively small, posterior ocelli about 30μm in diameter, 67μm apart from each other in holotype. Antennae ( Fig. 135 View FIGURES 133–140 ) about 1.6 times as long as head; segment VIII long and constricted at base, almost as long as VII; segment III almost as long as IV, about 3.2 times as long as broad; sense-cones short, segment IV with four sense-cones. Maxillary stylets wide apart, retracted to middle of head. Pronotum ( Fig. 134 View FIGURES 133–140 ) shorter than half the length of head, 0.43 times as long as head in holotype; dorsal surface almost smooth, weakly sculptured with reticulation laterally and posteriorly. Prominent setae blunt or nearly pointed, am shorter than 30μm. Mesopresternum ( Fig. 140 View FIGURES 133–140 ) distinct, posterior margin and lateral margins formed obtuse angles, lateral margins about 1/2 as long as posterior margin. Metanotum ( Fig. 136 View FIGURES 133–140 ) without CPS. Fore femora moderately enlarged, each with four long setae (50–70μm in holotype) on dorso-external surface; fore tarsus with a wide-based stout tooth. Fore wings each with 46–48 duplicated cilia in holotype; three sub-basal setae long, S1 and S2 blunt, S3 sharply pointed; one accessory seta well developed, 45–50μm in holotype. Pelta ( Fig. 136 View FIGURES 133–140 ) broadly triangular, without distinct lateral wings. Abdominal tergite II strongly eroded laterally at anterior 2/3. Posteromarginal setae on abdominal tergite IX sharply pointed, a little shorter than tube, S1 and S2 subequal in length. Tube ( Fig. 137 View FIGURES 133–140 ) barely longer than head, almost straight sided, 4.0–4.1 times as long as broad, very weakly constricted at apex.
Measurements (holotype female in μm). Body length about 4800 (distended). Head length 550, from anterior margin of eyes 510, width 286; eyes length 118, width 75; postocular setae 210; anteocellar setae more than 40; postocular cheek setae 60–65.Antenna total length 900, segments I–VIII length (width) as follows: 90 (67), 90 (48), 175 (54), 173 (55), 150 (50), 110 (42), 60 (30), 60 (18). Pronotum length 236, width 425. Setae on prothorax: am 25, aa 58–62, ml 77, pa 115–118, epim 180–190, cox 70. Fore wing length 2050. Sub-basal wing setae: S1 75–80, S2 140–150, S3 290–300. Setae on tergite IX: S1 500–520, S2 530. Tube length 560, maximum width 138; terminal setae 360–370.
Male (macroptera). Distended body length: 5.0mm. Colour and structure very similar to female. Head about 2.0 times as long as broad. Prothorax and fore legs stouter, fore femora enlarged ( Fig. 133 View FIGURES 133–140 ); pronotum about 0.6 times as long as head; fore femoral latero-dorsal setae 100–180μm. Tube about 3.9 times as long as broad, very weakly constricted sub-basally.
Measurements (paratype male in μm). Body length about 5000 (distended). Head length 580, from anterior margin of eyes 530, width 293; eyes length 140, width 76; postocular setae 200–210. Antenna total length 975, segments I–VIII length (width) as follows: 112 (70), 100 (50), 200 (53), 175 (55), 155 (52), 110 (42), 67 (30), 65 (20). Pronotum length 345, width 535. Setae on prothorax: am 25–30, aa more than 60, ml 85–100, pa 80, epim 175, cox 75–105. Fore wing length?. Sub-basal wing setae: S1 80, S2 140, S3 270. Setae on tergite IX: S1 500, S2 510. Tube length 560, maximum width 144; terminal setae 360–380.
Type series. Holotype: macropterous female, Borneo, Sabah, Keningau , 13.iv.1989, K. Matsumoto . Paratypes: Borneo, Sabah, 2 females, collected together with holotype; N 5mls from Keningau, Bunsit , 1 male, on dead leaves and branches, 1.iv.1989, K. Matsumoto; Jl. Kimanis, 18km from Keningau, 1 female, on dead leaves and branches, 3.ix.1990, TN & SO; N about 3km from Keningau, 3 females, on dead leaves and branches, 6.ix.1990, TN & SO; Keningau, Taman Bundukan, 2 females and 1 male, 15.iii.1992, S. Itoh; Mt. Kinabalu , Head Quarter, 1 female, 28.iv.1979, Y. Yoshikawa; NW 16mls. from Keningau, 1 male, 26.v.1982, S. Nagai .
Remarks. E. setosus was collected together with another new species E. longiceps sp. n. described above, and these two species are somewhat similar in appearance. However, setosus has the setae longer, such as mid-vertex setae, cheek setae and fore femoral setae, four sense-cones on antennal segment IV and has no fore tibial apical tubercle, while longiceps has the setae shorter, five sense-cones on antennal segment IV (with a small dorsal sense–cone in addition to four regular ones), and has a fore tibial apical tubercle.
