( Figs 7–10 View FIGURES 6 – 7 View FIGURES 8 – 10 )

Evaza discolor de Meijere, 1916a: 15 View in CoL

Diagnosis. Scutum with dense, short and white to yellowish pubescence. Legs yellow, wing hyaline but stigma yellow to pale brown and wing apex usually slightly infumated. Cell r2+3 paler than wing membrane below and beyond it. Abdomen brown but discal part oftergites as well as some basal sternites reddish brown to orange. Male gonostylus with pointed submedian spine, each original gonocoxite with hooklike process at inner distal corner, distal margin of genital capsule somewhat emarginate medially. Female postocular area unusually narrow, often narrower than lateral ocellus.

Redescription. Male ( Figs 8–10 View FIGURES 8 – 10 ). Body length 6.8–9.0 mm, wing length 6.7–8.1 mm. Head barely longer than high in profile, about 1.5 times broader than long in dorsal view, with conspicuously prominent ocellar tubercle and eyes touching each other. Frontal silvery white patch above antennae transverse, reaching eye margin on each side and leaving only equilateral upper triangle shining black. Antenna yellow, arista black. Scape distinctly longer than pedicel, inner margin of pedicel arched, without inner prominence. Antennal flagellum round, barely broader than distal margin of pedicel. Face black, short whitish pubescence visible only along eye margin. Apical segment of palpus spindle shaped, slightly overlapping half length of labellum, yellowish brown.

Thorax black to dark brown, yellowish line along upper margin of anepisternum distinct, postalar callus yellowish brown. Narrow distal margin of scutellum and scutellar spines yellow, especially medial spines slender and long. Thoracic pile on scutum and scutellum short but dense and erect, white, much sparser on pleura. Legs entirely yellow, only fore tarsus rarely slightly darkened. Wing hyaline, stigma yellow to pale brown, cells r4 and r4+5 usually somewhat darkened. Calypters white and whitish pilose, halter pale yellow to brown. Abdomen broadly oval, dark but at least disc and basal sternites reddish brown to orange, abdominal pile inconspicuous, dark brown to blackish, longer along lateral margins but appressed on disc. Short and appressed ventral pile whitish. Genital capsule proximally narrowed, rounded and prominent proximally. Gonostylus flat, with submedial spine. Gonocoxite with hook-like inner projection on ventral side distally and gonocoxal apodemes short, not reaching over margin of capsule. Aedeagal complex compact, slightly dilated and rounded apically.

Female ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 6 – 7 ). Body length 6.0– 8.3 mm, wing length 4.5–7.8 mm. Head: Ocellar tubercle less prominent than in male, head almost round in profile and almost twice as broad as long in dorsal view. Frons tapering towards lower third, here about as broad as anterior ocellus or even narrower. Supra-antennal silvery whitish patch triangular, broadly separated from eye margins. Antennal flagellum larger than in male, pedicel with elongate triangular projection at inner distal margin. Arista black, paler in distal third. Postocular area unusually narrow, not reaching diameter of lateral ocellus in lateral view. Apical segment of palpus not swollen, longer than in male, reaching over half length of labellum, yellowish to brown.

Thorax: Scutum and scutellum similar to male, but postpronotal callus and narrow line along upper margin of anepisternum more yellow, also some parts of pleura below wing insertion yellowish brown. Posterior margin of scutellum bright yellow, slightly broader than in male, scutellar spines somewhat less different. Legs usually unicolorous yellow including fore tarsomeres. Wing as in male, slight darkening at apex often indistinct.

Abdomen usually somewhat longer than in male, pubescence even shorter and less distinct, predominatly white on venter. Ochre yellow patches sometimes limited to 2–3 basal tergites and also reddish patches on venter sometimes little distinct.

Type material. Two syntypes (male and female) from Indonesia, Sumatra, Simeulue, Sinabang, present in ZMAN ( Woodley 2001) (in RNH now) are conspecific. Male labelled “/Edw. Jacobson, Sinabang, Simalur, i.1913/ 15 54/ Evaza discolor , det. de Meijere, Type/“ and female labelled “/ Evaza discolor de Meijere 1916 , /ZMAN type DIPT. /0903.1/“. Condition: perfect.

Remarks. Resembling E. demeijerei with its hyaline cell r2+3 and yellow femora and tibiae but usually somewhat stouter and differing by the reddish brown to orange discal spot on abdomen and partly reddish abdominal venter. However paler patch on the abdomen may be reduced to the basal tergites or extented on larger part of dorsum. The male terminalia with a ventral hook-like prominence on each inner distal corner of the original gonocoxite.

Distribution. Indonesia: Sumatra, Pulau Simeulue (syntypes), from further Sumatran localities and Malaysia recorded here. Records from China, Japan, Taiwan ( Ôuchi 1940) and Indonesian New Guinea as well as Papua New Guinea ( James 1969) need a revision.
