ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1859b: 119 (key), 134 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus agri parmensis [ Parmese hills ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♂♂, syntypes (one missing left fore-leg), 2 ♀♀, syntypes (one slightly covered with mold, missing left mid-leg) ( MZUF: Box 13): Exorista Mgn / separata Rnd. / 634; 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUF: Box E): Exorista separata Rnd. , 226, ♀, Parma / 393 227; 1 ♂, syntype (abdomen partially eaten by dermestids) ( MSNC: Box DIPTERA Ex collezione Rondani - I): Exorista separata Rnd. 41 ♂ Parma / Coll. Rondani, scatola n° 1, posiz. D-8 / Museo di Storia Naturale Università di Pisa, Calci ( PI) ex collezione Rondani.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Senometopia separata ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 219, Pape et al. 1995: 21, O’Hara et al. 2009: 80, Cerretti 2010: 224, O’Hara et al. 2020: 354).

REMARKS: Rondani (1859b: 134) described both sexes of Exorista separata without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens; but from more than one specimen because he wrote: “ legitur … in tempore aestivo (Julii et Augusti) [found … in summer (July and August)]”. We found six syntypes in this study.
