Goniaspis peruana Duda, 1930

Goniaspis peruana Duda 1930: 64 (type locality, Peru: Callao).

Remarks: The holotype of G. peruana , deposited in the Hamburg Museum, was destroyed during the Second World War. In addition, the original species descriptions and key couplet ( Duda 1930) were not sufficient to distinguish between G. peruana and G. obscurata . Our concept of G. peruana is based on unpublished notes on the types made by C.W. Sabrosky in Hamburg in 1937, and by examination of specimens that were identified by Sabrosky subsequent to his study of the types. There are no discernable differences between G. peruana and the G. obscurata / G. opaca complex based on external characters. Because there are no illustrations or descriptions of the male genitalia of G. peruana , we cannot determine whether G. peruana is closer to G. obscurata or to G. opaca . To avoid attaching a species description to an existing name whose identity is questionable and for which no type specimen remains, we prefer to treat G. peruana as a species inquirenda
