Gypsophila brachypetala Trautvetter (1873: 471) emend. Armağan View in CoL ( Figure 2 View FIGURE 2 ).
Type (lectotype designated here):— TURKEY. Kars: Aschisch dade (near Tuzluca), 29 July 1871, Radde 493 ( LE- 01024090!).
Description: —Caespitose perennial, glabrous, with a caudex at the base. Stems slender, numerous, erect-ascending, 17–40 cm high. Basal leaves imbricate, linear (23–33 × 1.5–2.2 mm), acute-mucronate, green, 3-nerved, scabrous at margins and midrib; cauline leaves 5–7 pairs. Inflorescence ± corymbose, 3–8-flowered. Bracts ovate–lanceolate (about 2.0 × 0.7–1.0 mm), scarious. Pedicels 1–6 mm long. Flower with 8–11 ovules. Calyx campanulate, green and red-suffused, with distinct calcium oxalate crystals, 3.0–4.5 × 2.5–3.0 mm; teeths ovate (1.5–2.4 × 1.0– 1.5 mm), obtuse-mucronulate, broadly scarious at margins. Petals pink, oblanceolate (5.0–5.5 × 1.8–1.9 mm), obtuse to retuse. Capsule subglobose-ovoid (2.8–3.0 × 2.0– 2.5 mm), shorter than the calyx. Seeds brownish-black, orbicular-reniform (1.4–1.6 × 1.3–1.5 mm) with obtuse tubercles.
Phenology: —Flowering and fruiting times in August.
Habitat and distribution: — Gypsophila brachypetala is endemic to Kağızman (Kars, Turkey) where it grows on steppe slopes at 1500–1600 m a.s.l. ( Figure 5 View FIGURE 5 )
Conservation status: — Gypsophila brachypetala grows in one locality only where covers an area of about at most 5 km 2. Based on the criteria B1a, B1b(iii), B2b(iii, v), we propose to assess G. brachypetala as Critically Endangered (CR) ( IUCN 2014).
Typification:— Gypsophila brachypetala was published by Trautvetter (1873: 471) through a diagnosis and the citation of one locality and a collector [“In Turciae provincia Kars, in monte Aschich-Dade (Radde)”]. We traced five specimens (at G and LE) which were collected at the locality Aşık Dede Mountain (Kağızman) by Radde. According to the Arts. 9.2, and 9.11 of the Melbourne Code ( McNeill et al. 2012), a lectotypification is necessary. We here designate the LE specimen as the lectotype of the name Gypsophila brachypetala since it is that better preserved and showing more important morphological characteristics to fix the name.
Taxonomical notes: —The section Corymbosae Barkoudah (1962: 39) is represented in Turkey by Gypsophila brachypetala Trautvetter (1873:471) , G. tenuifolia Bieberstein (1808: 319) and G. patrinii Seringe (1824: 353) . The endemic G. brachypetala was described by Trautvetter (1873) on the basis of a Radde’s specimen collected from Kars in Turkey. No specimen has been collected from the same place since Radde. Our discovery (around of Akçay, a village of Kağızman) so represent the first record after Radde. Not in that the description of G. brachypetala was not sufficient, we amend it.
