Haplogryllacris castanea (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1888) View in CoL
Figs. 66 View FIGURE 66 D–E, 67H
Material examined. Himalaya, leg. Thorey— 1 male (holotype) (Wien NHMW); Indochina : Hinterindien, leg. Thorey— 1 female det. Brunner (Wien NHMW) .
Description. Medium sized to large species. Head: Face rather large, wider than pronotum, robust; frons ovoid, forehead shagreened; fastigium verticis distinctly wider than scapus, separated by a concave suture from fastigium frontis; ocelli distinct, especially median ocellus; subocular furrows distinct ( Fig. 66E View FIGURE 66 ).
Wings surpassing hind knees and reaching about mid-length of stretched tibiae ( Fig. 66D View FIGURE 66 ). Tegmen: Radius with two branches, both forked near tip; media anterior free from base, single-branched; cubitus anterior at base with a single branch that forks into two veins at about end of basal third of tegmen, the anterior branch makes a curvature and receives a very short connection vein from MA but does not divide instead runs as fused MP+CuA1 till tip, the posterior branch (CuA2) does not divide further too; cubitus posterior undivided, free throughout; with 4 anal veins.
Legs: Fore coxa with a spine at fore margin; fore and mid femora unarmed; fore and mid tibiae with four pairs of large ventral spines and one pair of smaller ventral spurs; hind femur with 7 external and 6–7 internal spines on ventral margins; hind tibia with spaced spines on both dorsal margins, ventral margins with one pre-apical spine; with 3 apical spurs on both sides.
Coloration. General color maroon with darker ornaments, legs of lighter color but fore tibiae black. Face medium reddish brown; fastigium verticis of lighter color; area below antennal scrobae and compound eyes almost black; clypeus yellowish brown, labrum reddish brown; mandibles black. In a female from Indochina (BrW5506), the face is uniformly blackish brown with the median ocellus yellow and the mandibles black. Tegmen yellowish, towards tip whitish semi-transparent; veins yellow, cross-veins in about basal half dark brown to black; afterwards light brown to pale; hind wing semi-transparent with brown veins and less dark veinlets.
Male. Eighth abdominal tergite distinctly prolonged, posterior area vaulted. Ninth abdominal tergite globular, in apical area with a medial furrow, shortly forked at base; apical margin slightly bilobate and with a short sharp tooth in about middle of each lobe. Subgenital plate rather short and wide; apical margin slightly bilobate with styli inserted at apico-lateral angles ( Fig. 67H View FIGURE 67 ).
Female. Seventh abdominal sternite with an obtuse swelling at each side before apical margin. Subgenital plate of the shape of a normal sternite: wider than long, apical margin subtruncate (maybe damaged: all sternites were cut along midline during preparation and stuffing of the specimen). Ovipositor elongate, slightly curved; tip subobtuse.
Measurements after Brunner (1888) (1 male, 1 female).—body w/o wings: male 32, female 32; pronotum: male 8, female 7; tegmen: male 35, female 32; hind femur: male 19, female 18; tegmen width: male 10.7; ovipositor: female 18 mm.
Discussion. The single female in the collection in NHMW Wien is labeled as from "Hinter-Indien" Indochina. It is thus not certain that it really belongs to the same species as the male or represents another similar species.
