Harpyrhynchoides butorides (Boyd, 1968)

( Figs. 22 View FIGURE 22 , 23 View FIGURE 23 )

Harpyrhynchus butorides Boyd, 1968: 19 , figs. K–N (type in USNM, examined). Harpirhynchus (Harpyrhynchoides) ? herodius, Fain 1994: 119 .

Redescription. FEMALE (1 cotype, Figs. 22 View FIGURE 22 , 23 View FIGURE 23 A–C). Body, including gnathosoma, 335 long (320–360 in 3 nontype specimens) and 250 wide (235–265). Gnathosoma length and width subequal about 85. Palp 43 long (41–45) and 31 wide (30–34), without lateral notches. Palpalae thickened, subequal in width ( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 A): dF 23–25 long, dG and l”G subequal, 17–19 long. Setae dG with 7–8 pectinations. Setae vF about 50 long, smooth. Subcapitulum ventrally without membranous projections. Peritrematal branch about 40 long. Idiosoma 245–265 long. Smooth cuticle between peritrematal branches and transverse striations apunctate. All dorsal setae slightly serrate. Dorsal shield unornamented, 150 long (150–180) and 185 wide (180–200), anterior margin widely concave, posterior margin convex. Idiosoma ventrally without scales or verrucosities, striated anterior to level of setal bases 1a and posterior to level of setal bases h1. Setae 1a situated slightly anterior to level of setal bases 1c. Setae 3a situated slightly anterior to level of coxal fields III. Distance between setal bases 3a 2–2.5 times longer than between setal bases 1a. Ventral setae h1 present. Distances h1–h1 and h2–h2 subequal. Coxal fields I and II with membranous fold in posterior parts. Vulvar pocket-like structure without long lateral longitudinal folds, situated slightly anterior to coxal fields IV. Vulvar apodemes distinctly developed. Lengths of setae: vi, ve, si, se, and c2 85–100 long, h 1 15–18, and h2 about 8. Solenidia ω 1 I and ω1 II 11–12 long, narrow straight and conical, with rounded apex. Empodium of tarsi I and II elongated, distinctly longer than respective tarsus. Genua I and II with 4 setae (d, l’, v”, v’), femora I and II with 3 setae (d and duplicate v), trochanters I and II with 1 seta (v). Apical segment of leg III with 4 setae; preapical segment with 1 seta. Leg IV with 2 segments; preapical segment with 1 seta; apical segment with 3 setae.

MALE (1 cotype in poor condition, Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 D–G). Body, including gnathosoma, 265 long and 200 wide. Gnathosomal length and width subequal, about 85. Palp 30 long and 32 wide, without notches. Palpalae thickened ( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 D): dG 16 long, slightly thicker than dF and l”G about 12 long. Setae vF 45 long, smooth. Subcapitulum ventrally as in female. Idiosoma 200 long. Smooth cuticle between peritrematal branches and transverse striations apunctate. Dorsal shield 135 long and 150 wide; with slightly concave anterior margin and widely concave posterior margin. Aedeagus 65 long, strongly curved, situated posterior to genital opening. Genital opening situated in posterior third of dorsal shield. Genital arch 12 long. Genital setae 6–7 long; setae g2 situated slightly closer to g3 than to g3. Distance g1–g1 25, g2–g2 15, and g3–g3 30. Setae vi, ve, si, se, and c2 —all slightly serrate, 80–90 long. Idiosoma ventrally without scales or verrucosities, striations indiscernible [specimen too opaque]. Coxal fields I and II smooth. Leg I and II setation as in female. Solenidion ω 1 I 12 long, slightly thicker than ω 1 II 11 long, narrow straight and conical, with rounded apex. Apical segment of leg III with 4 setae; preapical segment with 1 seta. Leg IV with 1 segment bearing 3 setae.

Type material. One female and 1 male cotypes ( OSAL 0 0 83706, 0083707) from Butorides virescens (Linnaeus) ( Pelecaniformes : Ardeidae ), USA: Massachusetts, Hampshire, 42.38°N, 72.52°W (USGS-GNIS), July 1963, coll. E.M. Boyd.

Type deposition. One female and 1 male cotypes in USNM.

Additional material. Three females ( OSAL 0082431–0082434), same host and locality, 21 September 1976, coll. E.M. Boyd. All specimens deposited in OSAL.

Hosts and distribution. Butorides virescens (Linnaeus) ( Pelecaniformes : Ardeidae ) from USA (Massachusetts) (Boyd 1968; present paper).

Differential diagnosis. Among species of the group herodius this species is closest to Harpyrhynchoides herodius . In females of these species, setae v of femora I and II are duplicate. These species differ from each other by the following character states. In females of H. butorides , palpalae dG are subequal in width to dG and l”G (vs. almost twice thicker in H. herodius ), the idiosomal venter is almost unstriated (vs. fully striated), and setae h1 are 15–18 long (vs. 3–5 long).
