Helisoma sp.

Helisoma is in need of revision. Two species have been reported from the Neotropics ( Cuezzo et al. 2020), but neither from the Caribbean. We have material from a culture kept at the University of the Virgin Islands at St. Thomas that was originally collected from the island of St. John; the exact locality is unknown. From St. Thomas, we collected several specimens of Helisoma sp. from Turpentine Run ghut at lower elevations and from container water in Tillet Gardens.

Helisoma was previously reported only from St. Croix and Puerto Rico ( van der Schalie 1948; Ferguson and Richards 1963; Harry and Hubendick 1964), so our material represents new records for St. Thomas. Harry and Hubendick (1964) report that Helisoma was introduced to St. Croix sometime in the 1950s.
