Helix busbyii Gray, 1840

Pl. 9, fig. A; Pl. 15, fig. B

Gray, 1840. Annals and Magazine of Natural History, 6: 317.

Type material: Syntypes (2), NHMUK 1840.10.30.1–2 (dry shell material) .

Label details: ‘ New Zealand, Mrs Dunn’

Type locality: ‘New Zealand’ ( Gray 1840: 317).

Previous illustrations of type material: Smith (1874: pl. 1, fig. 4 [the final whorl of this specimen has subsequently suffered damage]) .

Remarks: Gray’s original description of this species was based on two specimens collected by James Busby and donated to the British Museum by Mrs Dunn ( Gray 1840: 317). The species name has been consistently listed as busbyi by New Zealand authors (e.g., Hector 1873: 3; Hutton 1880: 21; Hutton 1884b: 207; Suter 1913b: 778; Parkinson 1979: 6; Powell 1979: 335; Spencer et al. 2009: 218), and because this spelling has been in prevailing use since 1873 it qualifies as a justified emendation of the original species name (ICZN Article 33.2.3.1). Helix busbyi Gray, 1840 is the type species of Paryphanta Albers, 1850 , by monotypy.

Current Taxonomy: Listed as Paryphanta busbyi ( Gray, 1840) by Hutton (1880: 21), Suter (1913b: 778), Climo (1977: 61), Parkinson (1979: 6), Powell (1979: 335) and Spencer et al. (2009: 218).

Distribution: New Zealand; North Island, Northland, including Taranga (Hen) Island ( Suter 1913b; Powell 1979; Spencer et al. 2006).
