Type locality. Panama, Bugaba.

Type holder. BMNH.

Lectotype designation. The male and female syntypes are card mounted. The male bears the following label data: Hemilypus obliteratus , var. V. de Chiriqui (on card with specimen). The female is labeled as follows: Hemilypus obliteratus , Type D.S., Bugaba (on card with specimen); Type (circular label with red margin); Bugaba, Panama, Champion; BCA Col. iv. 3, Hemilypus obliteratus Sharp. The male is designated as lectotype and the female as allolectotype.

Size range. Male: 3.7 x 1.4 mm to 4.2 x 1.6 mm; Female: 4.2 x 1.4 mm to 4.3 x 1.8 mm.

Description. Male: Head slightly longer than wide, moderately punctured; punctures separated by distance equal to or less than diameter of puncture; gena longer than ½ longitudinal diameter of eye; frons slightly wider than rostral base, with short fine midline impression; longitudinal diameter of eye distinctly shorter than rostrum; eyes strongly protuberant; longitudinal diameter of eye less than length of rostrum. Rostrum almost as long as head, widened beyond antennal insertions to width subequal to frons. Antennae inserted slightly behind middle of rostrum; club subequal to funicle in length; funicle segment 1 ovo­globose, subequal to scape in length but narrower; funicle segments 2–6 narrow, weakly clavate subequal in length; funicle segment 7 like 2–6 but slightly shorter; basal club segment slightly shorter than middle segment; terminal club segment distinctly longer than middle segment. Pronotum longer than wide, widest at base, moderately punctured; distance between punctures equal to or greater than diameter of puncture; anterior constriction weak. Elytra elongate, slightly more than 1 ½ times longer than wide, distinctly depressed behind scutellum, widest behind middle; striae diminishing in size beyond middle; intervals flat, as wide as striae at base, much wider than striae apically; interval punctures and punctures between striae much smaller than basal striae but subequal to apical striae; elytral setae erect, setae along elytral suture semi­erect; next to last strial row joins last strial row near apex of elytra. Female: Same as male except rostrum as long as head; rostral apex slightly wider than frons; antennal club distinctly shorter than funicle; and basal and middle club segments subequal.

Color. Body black and shiny throughout; antennae, mouthparts and terminal tarsal segments reddish­brown.

Comments. Sixteen specimens were examined. Hemilypus obliteratus is the only species of Hemilypus currently known from La Selva. Although very similar to the species of Eugnamptus , it is easily distinguished by the black shiny color and abundant ventral setosity ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 ). The setosity is especially abundant on the legs and distinctly whitish on the scutellum and thoracic pleura. The pedon is bladelike with a bluntly rounded apical tip and the TA is short and wide with two curved forcepslike distal projections ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ). This species has been taken in Malaise traps in old growth and secondary growth forest. A single male was collected at black light and single males were taken fogging P. macroloba and V. koschnyi .
