Impatiens stuhlmannii var. rubriflora Grey-Wilson (1980: 192) View in CoL , non I. rubriflora Grey-Wilson (1989: 105) View in CoL .

Type: — TANZANIA. Cultivated , 1 January 1979, Cribb, Grey-Wilson & Mwasumbi 11428 (holotype K [ K000419479 ]) .

Notes:— Impatiens kagamei ( Fig. 18 View FIGURE 18 ) was first described as a new variety of Impatiens stuhlmannii Warburg (1895: 254) ( Fig. 18 View FIGURE 18 ). Unfortunately, the type specimen is from a cultivated plant collected in a garden in Tanzania, which is said to be collected in Uganda. It is quite different from Impatiens stuhlmannii s.str. as morphological and molecular data show (Fischer & Janssens in prep.) and deserves the rank of a species. Morphogically it differs from I. stuhlmannii s.str. in the deep crimson flower colour, the dorsal petal more narrow with distinctly longer spur at apex, the upper lateral united petals distinctly smaller, the lateral united petals not curved above and not distinctly bilobed below. All populations studied in Rwanda (Cyamudongo) and Burundi (Kibira, Bururi) are uniform and Impatiens stuhlmannii s.str. does not occur sympatrically, nor are there any intergradations. Also, the pollination ecology differs as the UVabsorption of the flower shows different patterns indicating a different pollinator ( Fig. 18 View FIGURE 18 ). As the name Impatiens rubriflora was already used at specific rank for an endemic species from Sumatra ( Indonesia), a new name was required. We dedicate this species to H. E. Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, who decided to protect Nyungwe as National Park and thus to protect this unique biodiversity. Impatiens kagamei occurs in Rwanda at two localities in Cyamudongo Forest and is elsewhere found in Burundi (Kibira, Mt. Teza, Bururi) and the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. A detailed revision of the Impatiens stuhlmannii -complex based on morphological and molecular research is in preparation (Fischer & Janssens in prep.).
