Lageniporina verrucosa (Canu & Bassler, 1928) View in CoL comb. nov.

( Fig. 36 View FIGURE 36 ; Table 35 View TABLE 35 )

Lagenipora verrucosa Canu & Bassler, 1928a: 137 , pl. 21, figs 5–8; Osburn 1940: 450, pl. 8, fig. 65. Lagenicella verrucosa: Winston & Woollacott 2009: 274 , fig. 25.

Material examined. VMNH no. 70655, 70656, 70657; USNM no. 1283260.

Description. Colonies encrusting in uniserial chains ( Fig. 36 View FIGURE 36 A) that, if space permits, may branch off in side chains and even fill in empty space with additional zooids. Zooids oval, convex, their thickly calcified, verrucose frontal shield raised to form a cylindrical peristome at distal end. Scattered frontal and marginal pores, some tubiform, penetrate frontal shield. Primary orifice subcircular, smooth rimmed, with slightly deeper proximal portion, but minimal condyles ( Fig. 36 View FIGURE 36 B); orifice concealed in fully formed zooids by elevated thick, circular peristome, which varies considerably in length, with rim typically irregular or abraded ( Fig. 36 View FIGURE 36 E, F). Peristome lacking avicularia but intraperistomial pores may be seen on either side of unbroken rims. Ooecia small, located on distal rim of the zooid and opening into peristome; with semicircular band of very small pores peripherally ( Fig. 36 View FIGURE 36 E, F).

Remarks. Colonies of Lageniporina verrucosa are common on dead Oculina , readily growing and reproducing on the narrow cylindrical branches of the coral. The species was described by Canu & Bassler (1928a: 137) from deep stations between Cuba and Florida. According to their description, “It is fond of small round bodies for a substratum and it twists around them in all directions.” Osburn (1940) listed it from Puerto Rico. His illustrated specimen (Osburn 1940, pl. 8, fig. 650) shows the peripheral porous entooecium. Winston & Woollacott (2009) reported Lagenicella verrucosa from deep water off Barbados.

Distribution. Florida and Caribbean.
