Lichen cochleatus Dicks. (1785: 13) View in CoL .

Lectotype (designated by Jørgensen & James 1983):— ENGLAND. Dickson 1784 ( LINN).

Description: Aragón et al. (2005).

Notes: Leptogium cochleatum is characterized by the distinctly striate upper surface at 20× magnification and the subpedicellate apothecia on the lamina ( Jørgensen & James 1983, Aragón et al. 2005).

The examined specimen from Mato Grosso do Sul is more striate than European specimens, and further studies are still necessary.

The apothecia of L. cochleatum are constituted by thick paraplectenchymatous cortex at the thalline exciple, like in L. azureum (Sw.) Mont. (1840: 129) and L. moluccanum (Pers.) Vain. (1890: 223) . However, L cochleatum has distinctly striate upper surface ( Jørgensen & James 1983, Aragón et al. 2005) while L. azureum and L. moluccanum have smooth surfaces.

Distribution in Brazil: First record to Mato Grosso do Sul, previously reported to Minas Gerais ( Aptroot 2002) and Rio Grande do Sul ( Spielmann 2006).

Examined material: BRAZIL. Mato Grosso do Sul: Corumbá, Reserva Acurizal, córrego Fundão, 2.5 Km of waterfall, 17°54’00.8”S, 57°33’45”W, along córrego Fundão, next to local da Gaita, alluvial soil with organic matter, inclined area, 09 May 2003.
