Habitus. As for the genus; WL of males 6.5–7.1mm, of females 6.3–7.5mm.
Male. The front of the epiproct baseplate projects deeply into T10, dividing it into hemitergites. The overall shape of the baseplate is trapezoidal, with sinuous sides and wide truncate caudal edge with distinct caudolateral angles. The epiproct is of similar width and has a wide peduncle. In dorsal view, the front of the epiproct is slightly convex, the rear face flat to shallowly concave ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 10 – 17 ). The subterminal spinose area is transverse, in side view it appears as a hump. The epiproct is more deeply excavated than in M. descarpentriesi ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 10 – 17 ). The paraproct body ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 10 – 17 ) resembles M. descarpentriesi but is longer and more slender, each blade being 7.5 times as long a wide.
Female. The long and narrow ovipositor is of uniform width over most of its length. It is a firm brown structure without macroscopic pilosity, except the two setae at the shallowly bilobed tip of S8. In ventral view the ovipositor extends beyond the abdominal tip for a distance that equals the basal width of S8 ( Figs. 22, 23 View FIGURES 18 – 24 ).
Note. This species is recognized by the ovipositor. The species was first described from northern Madagascar but is actually widespread on the island although not common. Paulian's (1959) illustrations of the male, especially the long paraproct body, agree with the present specimens. In two distant regions, sexes were found in the same area and occurred in small numbers in trap catches dominated by other species.
In a single seemingly teneral male (WL 5.7mm) the divided antecosta of T10 forms a pair of slightly asymmetrical, slightly raised lobes ( Figs. 16 View FIGURES 10 – 17 ). Insofar it corresponds to Male sp. 3 of Paulian (1959) which has not been illustrated. Paulian compared it to M. bezanozano Paulian, 1959 which I have not seen, also no male with an epiproct as wide and with prominent rear corners as shown for M. bezanozano . The paraproct body of the present male agrees with M. descarpentriesi , the epiproct resembles it also but is more strongly bent forward. The crumpled cerci suggest an artifact. It is unclear if this male is malformed or if it represents a separate taxon.
