Neotype (designated here):—[illustration] tab. XV − XVII, fig. 6 in Morren (1875d).

Note:— Calathea pulchella was poorly described by Morren in 1874. A year later, Morren published a detailed description and an illustration of the leaf for this species but combined it in Maranta . The chosen neotype corresponds to Fig. 6 in the illustration provided in the description of M. pulchella ( Morren 1875d: 272) . Because this name is a later homonym of M. pulchella Linden & K. Koch (1857: 243) , and therefore illegitimate, a replacement name is indicated (Art. 6.11 of ICN, McNeill et al. 2012). The epithet ‘pusilla’ refers to the small-sized leaves, as M. pulchella É.Morren was described as a ‘petite and charming plant’ ( Morren 1875d: 272).
