Material examined. 158 specimens (26.8–49.8 mm SL): MNRJ 31307, 50(26.8–47.1 mm), D-0462; MNRJ 31308, 15(28.5–47.1 mm), D-0463; MNRJ 31309, 69(34.7–49.8 mm), D-0476); MNRJ 31310, 9(33.9–41.1 mm), E-0534; MNRJ 31311, 2(40.3–41.1 mm), E-0537; MNRJ 31312, 1(37.0 mm), E-0523; MNRJ 31313, 1(43.0 mm), E-0538; MNRJ 31314, 1(35.6 mm), D-0464; MNRJ 31315, 10(37.5–40.2 mm), D-0471.

Diagnosis. Maurolicus stehmanni can be differentiated from its congeners by the following combination of characters: head 27–29% SL; eyes 8.5–10% SL; greatest body depth (23–25% SL) just after pectoral-fin base, stomach and intestine unpigmented; 33–34 vertebrae (modally 33); branchiostegal rays 27–29 (usually 28–29); AC 23–26 (modally 25–26).

Meristic description. Fin rays: D 10–12; A 22–25; P 1 17–19; P2 7. Gill rakers: 25–29 (5–6+2+18–21). Photophores: BR 6; IV1 6; IV2 12 –13; VAV 6; AC 1 15–17; AC2 7–9; AC 3 15–18; AO 9–10.

Distribution. Western South Atlantic along the continental slope, between 16° and 40°S.

Remarks. The capture of 38 specimens at a single station (D-0396) on the Royal Charlotte Bank (16°S) marks the northern limit of distribution of M. stehmanni . Previously referred to as M. muelleri by Vazzoler (1975), Zavala-Camin (1981), Séret & Andreata (1992), and Haimovici et al. (1994).
