Mungos mungo subsp. mungo Gmelin 1788 View in CoL , in: Linnaeus, Syst. Nat., 13th ed., Vol. 1: 84.

Type Locality: "Bengala, Persia, aliisque asiae", restricted by Ogilby (1835:101) to " Gambia ". However, Thomas (1882) believed it to be in the eastern part of South Africa, [former] Cape Prov., as did Roberts (1929).

Synonyms: Mungos mungo subsp. fasciatus (Desmarest 1823) ; Mungos mungo subsp. taenionotus (A. Smith 1834) .
