Myllaena rufotestacea Cameron, 1933 View in CoL

[Japanese name: Hime-migiwa-hanekakushi]

(Figs. 3, 12–14, 18)

Myllaena rufotestacea Cameron, 1933: 173 View in CoL (original description; type locality: Japan, “KOBE: Mayasan” [Kôbe-shi, Hyôgoken, western Honshû]); Smetana 2004: 465 (catalogue); Schülke & Smetana 2015: 679 (catalogue).

Type material. Lectotype, here designated, ♂, “ Type [RRL]// JAPAN / Kobe // Mayasan /12.IV.30// Cameron /Bequest./ B. M. 1955–147.// Lectotype / Myllaena /rufotestacea/ Cameron, 1933 /des. Maruyama, 2011” (abdominal segments VII–X and aedeagus were dissected and mounted by MM) . Paralectotype: 1 ♀, 1 unsexed, same original labels as lectotype but one with the label “M./rufotestacea/ TYPE Cam.” .

Specimens examined. [ Japan]: Kyûshû : 8 ♂, 7 ♀, 21 unsexed, Kyusuikei, Ôita-ken, 2 IX 1985, A. Miyata .

Distribution. Japan (Honshû: Hyôgo; Kyûshû: Ôita).

Redescription. Body (Fig. 3) medium sized, slender, about 1.8–2.4 mm, widest at elytra. Color pale yellowish brown, but abdomen slightly darker; pronotum and elytra similarly colored, paler than head; mouthparts and antennae pale yellowish brown, palest of body.

Head subtriangular, more or less produced anteriorly, wider than length, shorter than pronotum and elytra; eyes medium sized, almost as long as tempora length; antenna pale yellowish brown, longer than total length from head to pronotum; antennal segments all longer than width; segment I shortest, about half shorter than II, almost 0.6 times shorter than III; XI longest, about 2.6 times longer than I.

Pronotum slightly shorter than longest length of elytra and wider than head, trapezoid, wider than length and widest at base; basal width about 1.5 times wider than narrowest width.

Elytra wider than length; hindwings not examined, probably brachypterous.

Median lobe of aedeagus (Figs. 12 – 13) with base of apical lobe slightly dentate in lateral view; flagellum long, thick; basal sclerites slightly connected at middle; apical sclerites separated. Spermatheca (Fig. 14) about 3.5 times coiled at base.

Measurements of lectotype. BL, ≈ 2.4; PL, 0.43; PW, 0.62; HTL, 0.33.

Measurements of the specimens from Ôita. BL, ≈ 1.8–2.4; FBL, 1.0–1.3; HL, 0.33–0.40; HW, 0.40–0.45; PL, 0.45–0.55; PW, 0.65–0.68; EL, 0.50–0.55; EW, 0.75–0.80; HTL, 0.35–0.43; AL, 0.95–0.10; AS-I, 0.09–0.10; AS-II, 0.10–0.11; AS-III, 0.08–0.09; AS-XI, 0.12.

Comments. This species was originally described from Maya-san and the exact number of the syntypes was not specified. MM found three syntypes in BMNH and one of which is designated as lectotype. The genital morphology of the specimens from Ôita-ken almost matches those of the type series of M. rufotestacea Cameron, 1933 . Therefore, we consider that the species from Ôita-ken is M. rufotestacea Cameron, 1933 . This species is recorded from Ôita-ken for the first time. A distribution map of the examined specimens of this species in Japan is illustrated in Fig. 18 View FIGURES 18 .
