3.11. Myrcia sericea G.Don ( Don 1832: 844) View in CoL . Type:— BRAZIL. Maranhão. No specimen cited in the protologue.
George Don collected in Rio de Janeiro and in Maranhão in 1823. He described these three species of Myrcia from Maranhão almost in sequence. They are currently accepted ( POWO 2024) but their identity is unknown as no type are cited. Their protologues are short and the information is insufficient to be sure that the species are indeed Myrcia , except for the inflorescence. The inflorescence is described as a racemose panicle, which agrees with the standard Myrcia inflorescence but that occurs in other Myrtaceae genera as well.
TL-2 cites the following herbaria as housing Don’s collections: BM (main collection), and BR, CGE, CGG, COI, E, GOET, K, LD, MO, OXF, PH. We have searched the BM, CGE, K and OXF collections personally for the types. No types and no other related specimens were found during the preparation of the present study.
