In adults, the epidermis consists of one or two outer layers of partially cornified squamous cells (stratum corneum), one to five layers of cuboidal or polyhedral cells (stratum granulosum and stratum spinosum) and a basal layer of cuboidal or columnar cells (stratum germinativum). In all species, the basal layer is composed of one cell layer. The PoSt region and the dorsal region have the same number of layers within each species but present an extensive variation between species. Because this character represents an ordered and progressive series, it is considered an additive character.
