Neomuscina snyderi sp. nov. Pereira - Colavite & Carvalho

Diagnosis: acrostichal 0:1; dorsocentral 2:3; mid femur with three preapical setae; male: intra-alars 2; female: epiproct with seven setulae (2:1:4).
Color: general body coloration brownish yellow; frons brownish yellow, apex brown; facialia and parafacialia white; gena brownish yellow; antenna and palpus light yellow; scutum brownish yellow with four dark stripes of grey pruinosity; humeral callus and apex of scutellum yellow; calypters and halter yellowish white; wing hyaline.
Male. Length. Body: 4.6 mm; wing: 5 mm.
Head: eyes separated from each other by 0.1 mm, at level of ocellar tubercle; 9–10 pairs of convergent frontal setae; ocellar seta large and parallel; postocellar seta small and divergent; inner vertical seta small and convergent; outer vertical seta small and divergent.
Thorax: acrostichal 0:1; dorsocentral 2:3; intra-alars 2; fore tibia with distinct submedian anterodorsal setae; apex of fore tibia with setae on dorsal, posterodorsal, posteroventral and ventral surfaces; mid femur with row of setae on posteroventral and anteroventral surfaces from base to middle, reappearing near apex, and with row of anterior setae from base to middle; mid femur with three preapical setae, on dorsal, posterodorsal and posterior surfaces; apex of mid tibia with setae on anterior, dorsal, posterodorsal, posterior, posteroventral and anteroventral surfaces; hind femur with complete row of dorsal and anteroventral setae, and row of posteroventral setae from base to middle, reappearing near apex, and row of anterodorsal setae from base to middle; hind tibia with one submedian anterodorsal seta and five or six submedian anteroventral setae; hind tibia with anterior, anterodorsal, dorsal, ventral and anteroventral setae at apex; wing with one dorsal and two ventral setae at apex of stem vein.
Abdomen: epandrium, in profile, rounded; cercus, in profile excavated apically.
Female (differing as follows): Length. Body: 5.6–6.1 mm; wing: 5.8–6.4 mm; eyes separated from each other by 0.29 mm, at level of ocellar tubercle; ten pairs of convergent frontal setae, except for upper two pairs, divergent; ocellar seta large and postocellar seta small, both divergent; inner vertical seta large and convergent, and outer vertical seta small and divergent; hind tibia with four submedian anteroventral setae; wing with one or two dorsal and three ventral setae at apex of stem vein; two rows of dorsal setae between segments VI and VII; sternite VIII with strong spike-like setae; epiproct with seven setae, arranged from base to apex (2:1:4).
Comments: N. snyderi sp. nov. fits the description of ‘ Neomuscina species 2’ made by Snyder (1949: 19), being quite similar to N. currani , although Snyder’s morphospecies is from Mexico and Neomuscina snyderi sp. nov. is from Brazil. Both species differ from N. currani by the absence of ventral seta on R4+5 and the hyaline wings. Snyder hesitated to name his exemplar, keeping it only as ‘ Neomuscina species 2’. The examination of the male and the female terminalias indicates that these individuals collected in Brazil actually belong to a new species, which seems to be Snyder’s ‘ Neomuscina species 2’.
Etymology: in honor of Fred M. Snyder, American dipterologist.

Tavares & eq. col.”; label: red, printed HOLOTYPE; abdomen dissected and stored in a microvial with glycerin; deposited in MZUSP. Type-locality: Mata de São João, Bahia, Brazil.
