Nitops nigrovittatus (Parsons)

Nitops mexicanus ( Reitter, 1873) = Nitops nigrovittatus ( Parsons 1943: 167) , new synonymy

Nitops nigrovittatus is hereby placed in synonymy with Nitops mexicanus ( Reitter, 1873) . This placement was first proposed by Parsons in correspondence recently found in the MCZ. Kirejtshuk (1997) also referred to this possible status change, however he represented the issue with a “?” in his publication denoting uncertainty about the status of the species. The junior name has been used in recent work (see Torres 2013) and persists as the principal determination in museums in North America , thereby demonstrating the need for clarification. The examination of type material and specimens identified by Parsons later in his career agree with the proposed change. Nitops mexicanus is a variable species ranging from the southwest United States south into Central America.
