Oecetis angelae , new species
Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 A–G
The male of Oecetis angelae sp. nov. is similar to that of O. oberdoffi Rueda Martin et al. 2011 . However, the new species can be easily distinguished from O. oberdoffi mainly by the shapes of tergum X and inferior appendages. Tergum X is shorter in O. angelae sp. nov. and has a shallow U-shaped median excision in dorsal view, while in O. oberdoffi it is deeply excised. Furthermore, in the new species the inferior appendages each have the dorsal process small and digitate, whereas in O. oberdoffi it is large and almost square. Another important characteristic in new species is that fork I is petiolate in forewings while O. oberdoffi has fork I sessile.
Adult male. General color (in alcohol) yellowish brown; legs, palps, and antennae pale brown. Wings pale brown, without spots or bands. Forewings with R2+3 branched near midpoint of stigma (fork I petiolate), Hind wings narrowing toward the apices, R2+3, M and Cu1 branched ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 A). Length of each forewing: 4.0 mm (n=2).
Male genitalia. Segment IX annular and narrow (longitudinally short); anterolateral and posterolateral margins almost straight as viewed laterally ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B); dorsally with 2 dorsal knobs ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 B, 1C). Preanal appendages elongate, setose, with rounded apices ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 B, 1C). Tergum X short, slightly longer than half-length of preanal appendages; larger at base, with apex subtruncate in lateral view ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B); in dorsal view, tergum X with median, large U-shaped incision ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 C). Inferior appendages short, setose; in lateral view, each with small, rounded dorsolateral process, bearing row of robust setae on dorsal margin, apex narrow, blunt ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 B); in ventral view, bases of inferior appendages large, expanded mesally, narrowed at tip, bearing long setae ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 D). Phallic apparatus, in lateral view, short, tubular, slightly curved ventrad ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 E); endotheca membranous, with crescentlike phallotremal sclerite and bearing 2 rows of spines on apical third as viewed ventrally ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 F).
Holotype male: BRAZIL: Mato Grosso do Sul: Ladário, Pantanal, Rio Paraguai floodplain, lake near Pousada Porto Vitória Régia, 19°01’10.00”S, 57°33’02.10”W, 91 m, 17.ix.2008, A.M. Sanseverino leg. ( DZRJ 3523).
Paratype: Same data as holotype, 1 male ( DZRJ 3524).
Distribution: Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul state).
Etymology: It is with great pleasure that we dedicate this species to Prof. Dra. Angela Manzolillo Sanseverino, who collected the type specimens, in recognition of her important contributions to the taxonomy of chironomids.
