Subfamily PACHYLAELAPINAE Berlese, 1913 View in CoL
PACHYLAELAPTINI Berlese, 1913: 11.
Subfamily diagnosis (adults)
Pachylaelapinae are podospermal monogynaspid Mesostigmata with a holodorsal shield typically bearing a hypotrichous set of setae (exception: Pachysphaerolaelaps with about 80 pairs). In females, sternal shield fused to endopodal and metasternal shields, with four pairs of setae and three pairs of lyrifissures; epigynal shield fused with ventral shield to form a genitoventral shield normally bearing a pair of genital setae and at least one pair of ventral setae; genitoventral shield often greatly expanded towards the anal shield, trapezoidal, subrectangular to oval, or tongueshaped, posterior margin moderately rounded to truncate; anal shield usually free and subtriangular, sometimes fused with genitoventral shield to form a genitoventrianal shield capturing several pairs of ventral setae; peritrematal shields fused to exopodal and parapodal shields, usually produced posteriorly and connected with lateral margins of genitoventral shield. Endopodal and exopodal shields between coxae II and IV closely abutting each other but not fused. Corniculi horn-like to lance-like. Palpgenu with six setae, palp apotele three-tined. Epistome with wide base and central projection with narrow neck and subdivided apex. Chelicerae chelate-dentate, arthrodial corona not produced into a brush. Pilus dentilis present. Sperm access system with tubular or saccular components opening onto coxae III or IV. Ambulacrum of tarsi I–IV with claws, trochanter I with six setae, tibia I and genu I each with two anterolateral, five or six dorsal and two to four ventral setae. Genu IV with seven to ten setae. Legs II enlarged, tarsus II with zero to two spur-like distal setae. Male with holoventral shield, peritrematal shields fused with ventral scutal complex; legs II spurred; spermatodactyl present.
