Distribution and habitat. Bachia panoplia is endemic to Brazilian Amazonia , showing a predominantly northern distribution ( Fig. 3 ). Until now it was only known from the surroundings of Manaus and from Tefé, both in the state of Amazonas. We found it occuring along a narrow area north of the Amazon River, between the Negro and Paru do Oeste rivers (states of Amazonas and Pará), and south of the Amazon River, apart from Tefé (specimen not examined—Kizirian & McDiarmid 1998), in Santarém and Belterra municipalities, in the state of Pará. All southern localities are also in a relatively narrow band along the Amazon River ( Fig. 3 ). Bachia panoplia is fossorial and diurnal, inhabits primary and secondary terra firme forests, as well as stream valleys, where it is found in the forest floor and in leaf litter; it was also found in disturbed areas within the city of Manaus (Zimmerman & Rodrigues 1990; Vitt et al. 2008; Ávila-Pires et al. 2010). Ayala (1986) reported specimens from Colombia, but they were later described as a distinct species ( Bachia pyburni ; Kizirian & McDiarmid 1998).
