ASCANIUS CRAMER, 1775

Pap[ilio] Eq[ues] Achiv[us] ascanius Cramer, 1775: 20–21 , 151, pl.14, fig. A [original plate 74, fig. A]. Rio Janeiro, coast of Brazil (E.F.Alberti). [ Papilio ascanius Linnaeus, 1768 , rejected by ICZN 1954, Opinion 265].

Papilio Eques View in CoL Achivus ascanius, Stoll, 1782b: 3 [No. 14].

Material examined. 1 ♂ ( BMNH (E)665386), with printed Felder label ‘ Ascanius Cram. ’ and ‘7’ (somewhat similar to labels elsewhere, including van Eyndhoven material – see aeneas Linnaeus of Cramer above) is a fair match for original plate 74, fig. A. Unlike the figure, it lacks any pink edging to the white band on the forewing, though this feature is probably exaggerated in the drawing as it is absent (or almost so) in all the BMNH specimens of this species. It appears to retain its original pin and has a few minor repairs. There is insufficient evidence to regard this as a type specimen.

Current status. Valid species in Parides ( Häuser et al., 2003) .
