Material examined. Holotype: Male ( MNRJ 30462 View Materials ), Brazil, Piauí, Picos, Povoado Saquinho , moist soil with plant litter in closed forest, 7°7’33.26”S, 41°27’49.60”W, 03/IV/2022, leg. C. Bezerra-Pereira, J. Lopes & M. Viana. GoogleMaps Paratypes: 2 males, 6 females ( MZUSP 42752 View Materials ) , 2 males, 6 females ( MNRJ 30462 View Materials ) , 1 male, 1 female ( LABISO-UECE 0578 ) , 6 males, 10 females ( GETOPI-UESPI 0124 ), same data as holotype GoogleMaps .

Etymology. The new species name is a reference to the Brazilian state where the specimens were collected, Piauí.

Diagnosis. Color dark brown, eyes of three dark ommatidia, second antenna with peduncle bearing feather-like scale-setae, antennal flagellum with second article about four times longer than first, outer endite of first maxilla with 4+5 teeth, four of them pectinated.

Description. Maximum body measures: male 2.8 mm long, 0.9 mm wide; female (ovigerous) 3 mm long, 1 mm wide. Color dark brown pigments on males, yellowish pigments on females. Habitus narrow ( Fig. 2A View FIGURE 2 ). Dorsal surface bearing fan-shaped scale-setae ( Fig. 2B View FIGURE 2 ). Cephalothorax ( Fig. 2A, C View FIGURE 2 ) slightly involved by pereonite 1 epimera, anterior borders not reaching posterior margin of eyes, lateral lobes not well-developed; suprantennal line slightly downwards on middle; eyes of three dark ommatidia, arranged in triangle. Pereon with flagelliform noduli laterales, d/c coordinates with peak on epimera 3 and 5 ( Fig. 2H View FIGURE 2 ); pereonites 1 and 7 with slightly conspicuous epimera ( Fig. 2A View FIGURE 2 ). Pleon narrower than pereon, pleonites 1–5 epimera acute and directed backwards ( Fig. 2A View FIGURE 2 ). Pleotelson ( Fig. 2A View FIGURE 2 ) triangular with slightly rounded apex, lateral margins straight, distal portion not extending beyond uropod protopod.

First antenna ( Fig. 2D View FIGURE 2 ), medial article shortest, basal and distal articles similar in length, distal article with four apical and two subapical aesthetascs.

Second antenna ( Fig. 2E View FIGURE 2 ) short, distal article of peduncle stout bearing feather-like scale-setae; flagellum with second about four times longer than first; apical organ short.

Mandibles with molar penicil bearing up to seven branches; left mandible ( Fig. 3A View FIGURE 3 ) with 2+2 penicils, right mandible ( Fig. 3B View FIGURE 3 ) with 1+1 penicils.

First maxilla inner endite (not drawn) with two hairy penicils; outer endite ( Fig. 3C View FIGURE 3 ) with 4 simple teeth + 5 teeth, four of them pectinated.

Second maxilla ( Fig. 3D View FIGURE 3 ) inner and outer lobes rounded, without discernible separation; inner lobe with six thick setae, outer lobe with two thick setae.

Maxilliped ( Fig. 3E View FIGURE 3 ) basis with some conspicuous setae and sulcus lateralis; palp with two setae on proximal article; endite subrectangular, medial seta surpassing distal portion in ventral view.

Pereopods ( Fig. 4A–D View FIGURE 4 ) with strong and slender double-serrate setae; carpus I with ornamental setae ( Fig. 4A, C View FIGURE 4 ); dactylus with two claws, outer claw being larger than inner claw, dactylar and ungual setae are simple and not exceeding beyond outer claw.

Uropod ( Fig. 2G View FIGURE 2 ) protopod subrectangular, endopod inserted proximally, exopod longer than endopod.

Male. No apparent sexual dimorphism on pereopod I and VII ( Fig. 4A–B View FIGURE 4 ) except for differences in size, number and topology of spine-like setae. Pleopod I exopod ( Fig. 5A View FIGURE 5 ) ovoid and without setae; endopod ( Fig. 5B View FIGURE 5 ) elongated with distal portion pointed outward, about three times longer than exopod. Pleopod II exopod ( Fig. 5C View FIGURE 5 ) subtriangular with three simple setae on outer margin; endopod ( Fig. 5D View FIGURE 5 ) longer than exopod and distal part flagelliform. Pleopod V exopod ( Fig. 5E View FIGURE 5 ) triangular, with five simple setae on outer margin.

Ecological aspects. The specimens were collected in a hilly 106 m high area with full streams around the collection site ( Fig. 1A–C View FIGURE 1 ). Decompacted soil was covered by a 10 cm layer of leaf litter. Collections took place during the rainy season, which increased the water level in streams surrounding the area, contributing to the maintenance of soil moisture and favoring the occurrence of oniscids. Anthropic activities are almost nonexistent and there are few residences nearby.
