Pellaea ternifolia (Cav.) Link, Fil. Sp. View in CoL 59. 1841.

= Pellaea ternifolia (Cav.) Link var. petiolulata C.Chr., Ark. Bot. 20a: 18. 1926.

Range: —Hispaniola; southwestern U.S.A. to Bolivia ( CH, CO, LP, OR, PO, SC, TA), central Chile, and Argentina; Hawaii.

Ecology: —Very common; in arid regions, mostly among rocks, in crevices, rock walls, or ravines; 2150–4000 m.

Notes: —A very distinctive fern, with pinnae mostly with 3 pinnules, and atropurpureous petioles and rachises. In Tarija, many individuals have 1-pinnate blades. This form has been called P. weddelliana Fée , but plants with both 1-pinnate and 2-pinnate leaves are known and taxonomic separation appears not to be warranted.
