11. Persicaria wolfii (Kinkelin) Doweld , comb. nov.
Basionym:— Myrica wolfii Kinkelin (in Engelhardt & Kinkelin 1908: 226) (“ wolfi ”) ≡ Polygonum wolfii (Kinkelin) Mädler (1939: 92) (“ wolfi ”).
Type (lectotype designated by Mädler 1939: 92):— GERMANY. Frankfurt am Main, Weilbach, Klärbecken bei Niederrad (Senckenberg Naturhistorische Sammlungen Frankfurt am Main, n.v. [lost in World War II?], figured by Engelhardt & Kinkelin 1908: pl. 27, fig. 13a).
Stratigraphy:— Pliocene.
Status:— Fruits.
IFPNI registration lsid:— 36596889-DA13-4BF5-80AE-73428BFD2D53
Note:— The fossil fruits of the Persicaria - type were originally described as fruits of Myrica wolfii Kinkelin (in Engelhardt & Kinkelin 1908: 226) (as “ wolfi ”), but soon were revised as fruits of Polygonum s.l. ( Mädler 1939: 92). Mai & Walther (1988: 144) related this fossil-species with extant species P. lapathifolia ( Linnaeus 1753: 360) Delarbre (1800: 519) , but treated it as a distinct extinct taxon widespread in the Pliocene and Interglacial sediments of Western Europe. Accordingly a new combination is here proposed.
