1. Phaonia tuguriorum tuguriorum (Scopoli) View in CoL
( Figs 1A–D View FIGURE 1 )
“ Phaonia sordidisquama Stein View in CoL ”; Tiensuu 1938: 8 (Madeira); Frey 1949: 45 (Madeira); Pont 2008: 334 (Madeira). Misidentifications.
“ Phaonia canariensis Villeneuve View in CoL ”; Pont 2008: 334 (Madeira). Misidentification.
Taxonomic note. Tiensuu (1938) misidentified the present species as Phaonia sordidisquama View in CoL (presently treated as a Canarian subspecies of P. trimaculata View in CoL , see below) based on long series of specimens from two localities in Madeira. A reexamination of specimens from both localities (see above) revealed that they all belong to P. tuguriorum tuguriorum View in CoL . The Madeiran record of Phaonia canariensis View in CoL (presently treated as a Canarian subspecies of P. tuguriorum View in CoL , see below) by Pont (2008) also refers to the nominal subspecies of P. tuguriorum View in CoL .
Material examined. MADEIRA: [ MZH, OUMNH] Caramujo, 1250m, 5♂ 6‒14.viii.1935 (O. Lundblad); Rabaçal , 2♀ 17.vii–4.viii.1935 (O. Lundblad), 1♂, 1♀ 10.vii.1990 (M. Báez); Faja da Nogueira , c. 750m, laurisilva, 1♀ 20.xi.1980 (H. Enghoff & O. Martin) .
Description. See the above description of the Phaonia signata species group and species key.
Distribution. The nominal subspecies is widely distributed in the Mediterranean region and is here also recorded from Madeira.
