Phlebotomus breviductus Barretto, 1950: 146 ; male holotype. Type –locality: Fazenda Jerusalém, Alegre municipality, Espírito Santo state, Brazil. Fairchild & Hertig (1961): 250 (listed).
Lutzomyia breviducta: Martins et al. (1961) : 299 (cf. to L. appendiculata ). Theodor (1965): 187 (listed). Forattini (1973): 293, 301, 302, 372, 376 (distribution, description, male figures, key). Martins et al. (1978): 70 (listed and geographical distribution). Rangel et al. (1985): 373(five females collected using human and horse bait). Dias et al. (1991): 338 (species inquerenda). Young and Duncan (1994): 679, 689, 704 (listed, key and geographical distribution).
Micropygomyia breviducta (oswaldoi series): Galati (2003): 34 (incertae sedis).
Male holotype. Head ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ). 380 long, 320 wide; clypeus110 long; ratio clypeus length/head length 0.3:1.0; eyes 210 long, 110 wide; interocular distance (ID) 110. Labrum-epipharynx (LE) 190 long. Lacinia with one row of external shallow teeth. Palpi ( Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 A–B): palpus lengths: pI 26, pII 104, pIII 156, pIV 117, pV 234. Palpal formula: I.II.IV.III.V; presence of 1 and 4 hyaline sensilla (Newstead’s spines) on palpi II and III, respectively ( Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 A–B). Labial fork present. Antenna ( Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 C–G): length of flagellomeres: fI 220; fII 135.2; fIII 137.8; fXIII 62.4; fXIV 62.4. Flagellomeres I–III with an apical papilla, fIX–XIV with median and basal papillae ( Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 C–G). Ascoids long reaching or surpassing the apical papilla and without posterior spurs ( Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 D–E). Ratio fI/ LE 1.2:1.0.
Thorax. 520 long, mesonotum 410 long. Paratergite pale; mesonotum dark brown; katepimeron and katepisternum pale brown. Ventro-cervical sensilla and setae on the anterior region of the katepisternum absent. Presence of eight upper anepisternal and four proepimeral setae. Wing ( Fig. 3A View FIGURE 3. A ): 2,220 long; 630 wide; veins R5 1,350; alpha 590; beta 280; gamma 320; delta 100; pi 130. Foreleg with coxa 700 long, femur 580 long, tibia 690 long, tarsomeres I–V 980; midcoxa 1,000 long, hindcoxa 1,100 long. remainder of mid and hind legs missing.
Abdomen. 900 long; tergal papillae absent on tergites II–VII. Terminalia ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3. A B) with gonocoxite 247 long, 59.8 wide, with six setae in the median region of each segment 9X thinner than the basal regions of the apical spine of the gonostylus; gonostylus 114.4 long, with five spines: one apical, two external, upper and the lower, and one internal, the lower external and the internal spines inserted on the same line in the middle of the gonostylus; a smaller and thinner spine is present between the upper and lower external spines ( Figs. 3 View FIGURE 3. A B–C); pre–apical seta absent. Paramere ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3. A B) with dorsal margin 143 long and ventral margin 200.2 long; simple, with straight setae inserted in its apical half; apical region digitiform. Aedeagus presenting the basiphallus with dorsal margin 49.4 long, ventral margin 57.2 long; darkly pigmented at the apex; ejaculatory apodeme (piston + sperm sac) 174.2 long; piston 148.2 long; ejaculatory ducts 270.4 with forked apex, 1.6 X the length of the ejaculatory apodeme ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3. A D). Lateral lobe 226.2long, 23.4wide, without pre–apical constriction.
