Hosts. Boraginaceae : * Emmenanthe penduliflora Benth. , * Eucrypta chrysanthemifolia (Benth.) Greene , Hydrophyllum L., Nemophila phacelioides Nutt. , Phacelia * campanularia A. Gray , P. cicutaria Greene , P. crenulata Torr. ex S. Watson , P. imbricata Greene , P. minor (Harv.) Thell. , P. viscida (Benth. ex Lindl.) Torr. ; Lamiaceae : “several” unspecified species; Phrymaceae : Diplacus aurantiacus (W. Curtis) Jeps. (Spencer 1981; Spencer & Steyskal 1986; Winkler et al. 2009). I. Winkler (in litt.) has provided the following details for the records given by Winkler et al. (2009), all from Jefferson Co., Colorado: Lair O’the Bear Open Space Park W. of Idledale, 12.vi.2003, 5³ 19 ♀ ex Hydrophyllum fendleri (A. Gray) A. Heller , 2³ 1♀ ex Lamiaceae (small unidentified plant); Lakewood, 8.vi.2003, 9³ 11 ♀ ex Mentha L. (cultivated mint; em. 15.vi.2003), mines found on adjacent Salvia officinalis L. but no adults reared.
Leaf mine. ( Figs. 59, 60 View FIGURES 57–63 ) According to Spencer (1981), an “irregular upper or lower surface mine.” The mines we found were entirely linear, often following the midrib or major veins, and they were either entirely on the lower leaf surface or sometimes with a short portion on the upper surface (apparently when the larva had temporarily run out of space on the lower surface). They were whitish, often indistinct on the lower surface; the upper surface portions were more distinct and had some brownish discoloration. The blackish frass was mostly deposited in discrete, well-spaced grains (closely spaced or in beaded strips in the early portion).
Puparium. ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 27–33 ) Formed within the mine, with the anterior spiracles projecting through the epidermis. Spencer (1981) stated that the puparium is whitish-gray; those we observed varied from yellow to brown or rarely blackish, and were invariably formed on the lower leaf surface.
