Pinguicula macrophylla Kunth View in CoL in Bonpland & Humboldt (1817: 226)

Protologue locality:—Crescit in Novae Hispaniae collibus inter urbem Guanaxuato et pagum Santa Rosa.

Type (lectotype, designated by Casper 1966: 114):— [ MEXICO]. S. Rosa , s.d., s. coll. [ A. J. A. Bonpland & F. W. H. A. von Humboldt s.n.] ( P barcode P00670051 !, isolectotype Am.[érique] équat.[oriale], s.d., s. coll. [ A. J. A. Bonpland & F. W. H. A. von Humboldt] 4117, P barcode P00072092 !, fragments 2 and 3; image of the lectotype is available at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/ p00670051) .

Note:—In the description of P. macrophylla (Kunth in Bonpland & Humboldt 1817: 226), the author mentioned a nonspecific locality between Guanajuato and Santa Rosa. Two original specimens associated to P. macrophylla were cited by Casper (1966) as “ holotype ” ( P) and “ isotype ” (P-Bonpl) respectively. These specimens were found at MNHN-P and they partially fit the locality cited in the protologue ( S. Rosa); therefore, it should be considered syntypes according to Art. 9.5 of the ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012). Following Casper’s citation, and according to the observation above, we herein correct Casper’s citation to lectotype and isolectotype respectively. The sheet P 00072092, labeled “ Pinguicula macrophylla ”, bears an unnumbered Bonpland’s handwritten label stating: “ Pinguicula macrophylla , foliis subrotundo ovalibus apice obtusis planis. Habitat ni [in] collibus Novae Hispaniae, niter [inter] Guanajuato et Santa Rosa” and is stamped “ Isotype ”. This sheet has been regarded as an admixture specimen ( Casper 1966, Zamudio 2001) containing parts of P. macrophylla , P. moranensis and P. heterophylla , and it has also been identified as Pinguicula caudata Schlechtendal (1832: 393) and Pinguicula mexicana Bonpland ex Casper (1966: 139) . The fragments are numebered: 1) a winter rosette with a sterile scape, 2) a fruiting scape, 3) a summer leaf, and 4) a flowering scape; and they were identified by Casper (review label dated on 1963), in accordance with Art. 9.14 of the ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012), as P. moranensis (1), P. macrophylla (2, 3) and P. heterophylla (4). Besides that, the collector number in the specimen’s label (4117) is directly related to P. moranensis (see note on P. moranensis ), therefore, just fragments 2 and 3 are recognized here as isolectotypes due to the original association of this sheet with the name P. macrophylla and the locality that appears in Bonpland’s label.
