Polypedilum (Pentapedilum) hirtiforceps (Kieffer) View in CoL comb. n.
( Figs 20E–H)
Pentapedilum hirtiforceps Kieffer, 1926: 104 View in CoL .
Material examined. GERMANY: Berlin, Grünewald , holotype male, 14.v.1899, J. J. Kieffer ( DEI) .
Diagnostic characters. Among species with numerous setae on the wing membrane, uniformly colored abdomen, foretibial scale without spur, base of superior volsella without microtrichia and with 4–5 inner setae the species can be distinguished by the L-shape projection of the superior volsella with the lateral seta placed medially and by the basally broad gonostylus tapering to narrow, pointed apex. The species is similar to P. (Pe.) tusimafegeum , but that species has an anal point with V-shaped basal ridge that is not present in P. (Pe.) hirtiforceps .
Male (n = 1)
Total length not measurable. Wing damaged, not measurable. Abdomen, thorax, femur, tibia and tarsi dark brown.
Head. AR 1.66. Ultimate flagellomere 728 µm long. Temporal setae 10, including 3 inner verticals, 3 outer verticals, and 4 postorbitals. Clypeus with 29 setae. Tentorium 133 µm long, 9 µm wide at posterior tentorial pit. Stipes 145 µm long. Palpomere lengths (in µm): first three not measurable, 147, 195.
Thorax. Acrostichals 12, dorsocentrals 19, prealars 5. Scutellum with 13 setae.
Wing. Subcosta with 1 seta, squama with 11 setae.
Legs. Foreleg lost. Spur on midtibia 48 µm long, on hind tibia 52 µm long. Comb on midtibia 23 µm long, combs of hind tibia 27 µm and 21 µm long. Width at apex of midtibia 55 µm, of hind tibia 64 µm. Length and proportions of legs as in Table 22.
Hypopygium ( Fig. 20E). Tergite IX with 18 median setae, laterosternite IX with 1 seta. Anal point 62 µm long, 9 µm wide at base, tapering to 6 µm wide apex. Transverse sternapodeme 73 µm long. Gonocoxite 181 µm long. Superior volsella ( Fig. 20F, G) 69 µm long, base bare with 4 inner setae, projection with 1 dorsolateral seta. Inferior volsella ( Fig. 20H) 135 µm long, nearly parallel-sided with prominent apical seta. Gonostylus 174 µm long, broad basally, tapering to narrow nearly pointed apex. HR 1.04.
Remarks. On the holotype, one superior volsella bears a dorsolateral seta on the projection while the other does not. The superior volsella is similar to that of Pentapedilum tusimafegeum , but the projection lacks the dorsolateral seta.
Distribution. Known only from Germany.
