Potemnemus tuberifer Gahan, 1894: 292 View in CoL
Figs. 42, 43 View FIGURES 41 – 44 , 81 View FIGURE 81 .
Examined type specimen. HT ♀ BMNH (photo examination), BL = 35.0 mm, Indonesia, Papua, Mount Arfak.
Morphological characteristics. a relatively large and robust species (BL = 35.0 mm) with body approximately 3.0 x longer than wide ( Fig. 42 View FIGURES 41 – 44 ). Antennae: long in the HT female, extending beyond apices by about 4–5 antennomeres. Thorax: pronotum is smooth and supplied with a longitudinal whitish and narrow band interrupted medially with a dark brown spot surrounded by whitish pubescence. The preapical transverse groove, or impression, medially across entire pronotum is weak. Elytra: sub-parallel with a mixture of small and large, glabrous granules concentrated around the distinctly raised and bulb-like area anteriorly, remaining surface of elytra flattened. The lateral carina with a series of small spines ( Fig. 43 View FIGURES 41 – 44 ), and distinctly curved inwards before 1/3 remaining of elytra towards apex ( Figs. 42, 43 View FIGURES 41 – 44 ). Elytral surface is convex (lateral view). The colour of elytra is brownish. Legs: strongly mottled with yellowish pubescence.
Remarks. The concentration of large granules at the anterior part of the raised section of elytra is a character that P. tuberifer shares with P. thomsoni sp. res., P. wheatcrofti comb. nov. and P. n y l a nd e r i nov. sp. The distinct lateral carina is curved towards the middle of each elytron 1/3 before apex, is unique to P. tuberifer and P. thomsoni sp. res. P. tuberifer is easily separated from P. thomsoni sp. res. by the dark brown colour and concave elytra (seen in lateral view), P. tuberifer is known from the Arfak Mountains (Bird´s Head Peninsula) on the western part of the island of New Guinea ( Fig. 81 View FIGURE 81 ).
