in Zhou, Ji, Liu, Miller, Yuan & Vlasák, Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology 12(no. 1100044): 8 (2023)

MycoBank no.: MB#847696; Facesoffungi number: 847696

Please refer to Zhou et al. (2023) for the description.

Known distribution & hosts: China: Hainan Province, Ledong County, Jianfengling National Nature Reserve, Yunnan Province, Mengla County, Wangtianshu Forest Park, on fallen angiosperm trunk; Costa Rica: Golfito, Playa Cacao, Playa Nicuesa; French Guiana, Roura, Camp Cayman, St. Laurent du Maroni, Gite Moutouchi, on fallen angiosperm trunk, Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, Miradero, Papaya House, on fallen mango trunk.

Specimens examined: Sri Lanka, Western Province, Gampaha District, Kadawatha , on Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam. (Moraceae) , 14.09.2022, Kasun Thambugala, KTSL019, ( USJ-H-121 ); ibid., 24.10.2022, Kasun Thambugala, KTSL036 ( USJ-H-122 ).

Notes: The strains of the freshly collected specimens USJ-H-121 and USJ-H-122 were clustered in the Pyrrhoderma nigrum clade ( Figure 2 View FIGURE 2 ) along with the type strain of P. nigrum (Cui 8546), and the specimens were identified as P. nigrum based on both phylogeny and morphology ( Zhou et al. 2023). This particular species was introduced by Zhou et al. (2023) based on collections made in China and Costa Rica. Although the publication covers every aspect of valid publication, it does not include the required identifier number obtained from a respective repository (Index Fungorum, Fungal Names, or MycoBank). Hence, the nomenclatural status of P. nigrum is deemed invalid (Index Fungorum, MycoBank 2023). Moreover, the fungus name was originally published as Pyrrhoderma nigra ” (with a feminine epithet), however, it must be corrected to the neuter form to agree with the neuter genus: Pyrrhoderma nigrum . Our specimens were collected from Artocarpus heterophyllus (Jackfruit) and this is the first record of P. nigrum on this host and the first country report to Sri Lanka.
