Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Curvelo, L. Riedel s.n. (lectotype: C 10020311!, designated by Stafleu (1953); isolectotypes GH 00045211!, K 001076930!, NY 00000990!, P 00733752!, P 00733753!, P 00733754!, S S-R-10216!, US 00108849!, W 0065433!). = Qualea dichotoma var. elongata (Warm.) Stafleu (1953: 206) .
= Qualea glauca Warming (1875: 49) View in CoL . Type:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Claussen 484 (lectotype: P 00733750 !, designated here; isolectotypes MO 2906251 !, NY 00923026 !, P 00697846 !, P 00733749 !, P 00733751 !, P 00733764 !, S S-S08-15958!, S S-R-10217!, U 0007119 !, US 0108853!, US 00730689!. Remaining syntype:— BRAZIL. Minas Gerais, ad Morada Nova versus fluv. Jndaiá , Netto s.n. ( R 72612 !, R 72649 !).
Distribution and habitat:— Taxon endemic to Brazil where it can be found in the states of Goiás, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Distrito Federal ( Flora do Brasil 2020 2016). Qualea cordata var. elongata occurs associated to Riparian Forest (Ciliary and Gallery Forests) at 400 − 1000 m elev.
Discussion:— Qualea cordata Sprengel (1824: 17) was described by Sprengel (1824), however, later, Martius (1826) proposed the combination of this species in the genus Amphilochia Martius (1826: 127) . The circumscription proposed by Martius (1826) was not followed by Warming (1875) and Stafleu (1953). Warming (1875) considered two varieties for this species, the typical and Q. cordata var. grandifolia Warming (1875: 52) . Later, Stafleu (1953: 208) proposed a third variety for the species ( Q. cordata var. intermedia Stafleu ). These varieties differed from each other basically by the length of the leaf blade; Lisboa (2000) proposed the synonymization of these three varieties under Q. cordata subsp. cordata , what is accepted by us. Yamamoto (2009: 133) combined Qualea dichotoma ( Martius 1826: 128) Warming (1875: 48) as a new variety of Q. cordata - Q. cordata var. dichotoma (Mart.) M.L.Lisboa & K.Yamamoto.
Stafleu (1953) designated as lectotype of Qualea glauca Warming (1875: 49) an unspecified specimen deposited at P; since there were five specimens of Claussen 484 at this herbarium, we selected here the specimen P 00733750. With the new combination here proposed Q. cordata counts now with three varieties that can be differentiated from each other by the key provided below.
