Rhinocladius culicinus Edwards View in CoL ( Figs 18 View FIGURES 1 8 )

Rhinocladius culicinus Edwards 1931: 271 View in CoL .

Material examined: CHILE: Terr. Rio Negro., L. Correntoso, holotype Ψ: 1825 xi 1926, F. & M. Edwards ( BMNH 192763); Llanquihue Prov., Casa Pangue, 3 Ψ paratypes, 410 xii 1926, F. & M. Edwards ( BMNH 192763). (According to Edwards, 1931, however, one of the paratypes is supposed to be from L. Correntoso.

Diagnostic characters: The imagines differ from the only other known species, R.. longirostris , by having labellae 0.500.56 times as long as the wing, several setae on postcubitus, and fewer prealars.

Female imago (n=34 except when otherwise stated)

Total length 2.602.98 mm. Wing length 1.702.10, 1.88 mm long. Total length/wing length 1.511.60. Wing length/length of profemur 2.322.43. Thorax, head and legs dark brown; abdomen dark with posterior 1/4 more pale.

Head ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 8 ). AR 0.420.44. Length of flagellomeres (in m) as: 6883, 77; 7194, 84; 71105; 7198; 6483; 154188. Third palpomere with 1624 (2) spatulate sensilla clavata, fourth palpomere with 34 (2) spatulate sensilla clavata. Labellae 8691106 m long, 4158 m wide, 0.500.56 times as long as wing.

Thorax ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 8 ). Antepronotum with 4 lateral setae . Dorsocentrals 1724, 21; acrostichals 1418 (2); prealars 78, 8. Scutellum with 1214, 14 setae .

Cell m with 112, 6 setae ; r4+5, m1+2, and cu plus an each with about 250300 setae ; m3+4 with about 7595 setae . Squama with 710, 8 setae

Legs. Spur of front tibia 34 m (2) long; spurs of mid tibia 30 (1) and 2326 m long; spurs of hind tibia 8394 and 2330 m (2) long. Remarks

R. culicinus is very similar to R. longirostris described below differing significantly only in the shorter labellae and the presence of setae on postcubitus. It thus is not unlikely that the species redescribed below represents only a form of R. culicinus .
